It’s of huge importance to become experienced in writing and the chosen discipline. You may find open-access projects of other students or already working civil engineers and learn from their successful experiences. Therefore, you should read a lot of samples written by successful students, professors, experienced engineers, and other people related to engineering writing. Don’t forget about informative and educational websites. They provide all kinds of guides, manuals, tutorials, etc.

Analyze Your Researches Early

Many students tend to linger until the last minute with different parts of their academic assignments. One of the typical delays is the analysis and sorting of the research methods. We understand that they are difficult and it’s not possible to manage them quickly. Nevertheless, you make a big mistake postponing the analysis.

Don’t forget that different spheres of human activity rapidly develop. Almost every day we receive updates, innovations, changes, etc. Many students appoint certain analysis methods and postpone them for many months or even years. When they return to that stage, their methods may be out-of-date. You’ll have to conduct many experiments and some data may get lost in time. It’s better to describe your methodologies as quickly as possible.

Maintain Quality

Oftentimes, students prefer quantity to quality. It’s a serious mistake that leads to undesired consequences. They write as if the hounds of hell are right behind them. Youngsters want to write multiple papers as quickly as they can. However, a great hurry leads to potential mistakes. Students simply omit mistakes because they work too fast. It’s better to take some time and set reasonable time limits. Focus on the quality of your research.

abstract bright close up color

When you prepare your projects, state the purpose of your research. Add relevant data that supports and explains your findings. Always describe the methodologies you’ve used to carry out the experiment. Be straight to the point and don’t overload your projects with irrelevant facts. Otherwise, you’ll simply confuse your readers.

Explain the Theory Behind the Data

If you want to enjoy success in academic writing, make sure you can explain the theory. Many students “apply” research, but don’t “explain” the theory. Don’t repeat that mistake and provide the necessary explanations. You’ll need the knowledge to ensure that objective.

Read current literature on the topic. Refer the facts you learn to the theories in your project. Implement your main concept and substantiate it. Obligatorily discuss the most crucial points of your research, mention possible drawbacks, propose solutions in new projects, etc.

Quote Fresh Information Sources

Some students tend to use supporting evidence without checking its relevance and updates. It’s very important to use up-to-date facts. Otherwise, your research will be irrelevant and useless. Your supervisor may tell you to rewrite the entire project. It’s another reason to submit all research projects early. If you delay for a year or more, new methods will become relevant and you’ll have to restart using them.

These were universal and effective recommendations to accomplish research papers in civil engineering. They will suit whatever topic you choose. In case you cannot choose a relevant topic, utilize our list of most popular topics to write flawless projects on civil engineering.

Environmental and Water Resources Engineering

Dr. Pandit  and  Dr. Heck  have worked together in several projects. While Dr. Pandit is an expert modeler, Dr. Heck’s expertise lies in laboratory and field data collection. Dr. Pandit has developed two finite-element ground water models, GROSEEP (Groundwater Seepage) and SOLTRA (Solute Transport), and two non-point source models CALSIM (Continuous Annual Load Simulation Model) and WEANES (Wet Pond Annual Efficiency Simulation). The research areas of interest of the faculty members in the Water Resources/Environmental Engineering area are listed below.

Numerical modeling of contaminant transport in subsurface media : We have recently conducted field, laboratory and numerical experiments to estimate the transport of groundwater seepages and nutrient loadings into a coastal estuary known as the Indian River lagoon from the adjacent watershed. Two of the numerical models used for this study are MODFLOW and SEAWAT. This research is part of a more comprehensive effort to determine nutrient loads into the Indian River Lagoon from various sources such as surface water flowing through canals, septic tanks and “muck”. Links to our recent publications and presentations are provided below: (Links 1 to 4)

Unstable flows using physical models : There are many real-world situations where a mass of relatively heavier fluid overlies a porous media containing a lighter fluid. For example, this is fairly common at landfills and waste dump sites, saline disposal basins, seawater inundation along coastal aquifers, and in estuaries. We have conducted laboratory and numerical experiments to study the transport mechanisms of overlying, heavier saltwater into underlying freshwater under various conditions. Links to a presentation we recently made is provided below. (Link 5)

Stormwater management : Our main areas of interest in Stormwater Management are in predicting non-point source nutrient loads from watersheds and in understanding the removal efficiencies of best management practices used to remove pollutants generated by non-point sources. Links to our publications are provided below. (Link 6)

Why Should I Pay Anyone to Write My Essay?

If you’re suddenly wondering, “Can someone do my paper for me?”, there’s likely a very good reason for that. After all, college is an eye-opening experience for most students. Not only is it your first attempt at independent life free from parents’ oversight, but it’s also a completely new level of academic requirements and independent study many aren’t ready for.

And if you’re an overachiever or a perfectionist, keeping up with all the classes, assignments, extracurriculars, and side gigs will keep you up most nights. You will soon forget about your plans to discover the party scene, visit your parents every other weekend, or find your soulmate on campus. If you try to stay on top of all your responsibilities, you’ll likely burn out or suffer an anxiety attack sooner rather than later.

So don’t feel bad if your thoughts go from “Can someone write my paper?” to “Write me a paper asap!” within the first few weeks of the college term. You’re not alone, and it’s perfectly normal to struggle in a new environment and buckle under the weight of elevated expectations.

Luckily, you don’t have to suffer in silence or give up on your dream of a college degree. Instead, you can seek help. And nowadays, it’s as easy as typing “Make an essay for me” in live chat.

We Handle Any Paper Writing Task for High School, College, and Grad School

One of the most common complaints when it comes to paper writing is a poor writing style, unsuitable for a specific academic level. Fortunately, that never happens to our customers, as we carefully match your requirements with our writers’ expertise levels while keeping the rates affordable.

For example, when you come to us asking for a college essay, we’ll round up our experts with Bachelor’s degrees and above. Similarly, if you want us to handle MBA coursework, we’ll match you with a writer who already has their Master’s degree. And even doctorate papers, like thesis proposals or research papers, are not beyond our expertise, as our talent pool includes a fair share of PhDs.

So if you think our order form is too complex and your order doesn’t need to go beyond “Write essay for me,” we ask for your patience. After all, the more details you provide, starting with your academic level, the better we’ll be able to help you.

But please remember that writers may not be available 24/7, as they have research and writing to take care of. So anyone who comes asking, “write my paper for cheap” or “write my term paper without breaking the bank” will feel welcome and safe in the knowledge they’ll get the best value for money. Yes, it is legal. Whether you’re carefully considering “Can someone do my paper for me?” in the privacy of your own mind or clamoring for assistance with the bold demands of “Write my paper for me now!”, you’re in the clear until you submit the paper you purchase for grading under your name. Even that isn’t illegal in most countries, though it is frowned upon in most schools. It’s up to you to decide what to do with the paper you get after we fulfill your order.

Can I pay someone to do my essay after it’s done?

Sadly, no. In an ideal world of perfectly honest people, you’d say, “I need help write my research paper”, and we’d have it ready for you for free and rely on your generosity. In the real world, our writers, editors, and support managers are real people who like to have a roof over their heads and meals on their tables. Our refund policy keeps you safe, but only your upfront payment protects our writers from scams. But if you want further proof, you’re welcome to order an official plagiarism report with a similarity percentage. All it takes is checking the box in the order form or asking a support agent to add it to the bottom line when you come asking, “I need you to write an essay for me.”

How can I lower the price when ordering an assignment?

Although we keep our online paper help rates as low as possible, you can play around with the order parameters to lower the price. DUE: Friday 9/8/2023 23:59:59  Champaign time

The goals of this assignment are to (1) Introduce you to the basics of configuration testing (Ctest) which can help to select your course project. (2) Encourage you to reflect on and describe some difficulties you've faced in your development to inspire potential course projects.

Please complete this MP individually  – if you have any questions, please ask on Campuswire, preferably as private posts.

You should have already accessed your  VM  in MP1; if you still have issues, please ask on Campuswire.  Reminder:  Access to the VMs is restricted to the university network, so please follow instructions from  Online Information .

The university-provided VM ensures that we all have the same platform. (We can offer some help for debugging on this platform but not on other platforms.)

Part 1: Configuration Tests

Your task is to work with so-called "configuration tests", or "Ctests" in short. Configuration tests are software tests that exercise software code under different configuration values. They can be used to test the safety of configuration changes – one of the dominant causes of system failures and service outages.

Deliverables (p lace these in the root path of your 'cs527' repository, next to 'mp1.md' and 'mp0.md') :

  • mp2.patch (optional)

Step 1.1: Read the Ctest research paper

First, read/skim the Ctest research paper before doing the task – understanding the basic concepts of Ctest and configuration testing will make the technical work much easier.

Step 1.2: Run Ctest examples

To understand the Ctest better, let’s first run some existing Ctests. We will use Hadoop as the software project in this task. Hadoop is a large-scale distributed data analytic framework. Like any mature software project, Hadoop includes a lot of tests.

Setting up the Environment:

Check out the IDoCT repo.

Check out the Hadoop repo (commit:  a3b9c37a397ad4188041dd80621bdeefc46885f2 , corresponding to " rel/release-3.3.1 ").

(optional)  run all the Hadoop common tests (and note how long it takes for you).

run the specific test which we will use later.

Apply the Ctest patch which intercepts the configuration values read by the tests.

Apply the coverage patch which updates the version of Clover to 4.4.1 which does not require  a license key:

Play with Ctest:

Run a Ctest with a “good” configuration value, which is string “ AES/CTR/NoPadding ”, for configuration parameter “ hadoop.security.crypto.cipher.suite ”. The value is the default value . By definition, the Ctest should pass for any good values. So the Ctest run should pass.

The test coverage information of step #1 is stored in the folder $hadoop_dir/hadoop-common-project/hadoop-common/target/clover. You can use the following command to get the key information, and you can read this page to know the meaning of each metric.

Run a Ctest with a “bad” configuration value “ AES/CTR/Padding ” for the same configuration parameter. The value is incorrect. This Ctest run should fail.

The test coverage of step #3 should differ from the test coverage of step #1 due to the test failure. You can use the following command to check the diff.

Review the test code with your preferred editor:

Note : The test failed at Line 62 , throwing an IllegalArgumentException .

The Ctest may not always fail with the BAD value. But the coverage will potentially change. In this example, we want you to find how much the coverage changes even when the BAD value does not fail the test. Run these two commands (and some more but we are intentionally not telling you which exact more) to obtain the coverage for the test  TestSFTPContractSeek#testReadAtExactEOF with two different configuration values.

SMALL TASK:   Please refer to the clover report(s) and p ut the value of 'coveredmethods' of command1 and command2 to the first line  of mp2.md, in the form of "command1: {coveredmethods of command1}, command2: {coveredmethods of command2}".

Step 1.3:  (optional)  instrument the configuration interface.

Note:   This step is optional. You can directly check the  results in the IDoCT repo.

To understand which parameters are exercised by a given test, we need to instrument the configuration interface, which is often abstracted as GET and SET methods (the former reads the value of a configuration parameter, and the latter (re)sets a value of a configuration parameter). In this way, we can know for each test what configuration parameters are exercised during the test run (e.g., the parameter values are read by the GET call) and what parameters are reset during the test run (e.g., the parameter values are reset by the SET call). The final result is a mapping file, which maps each test to the parameters that are read by GET, excluding the parameters that are reset by SET.

Step 1.4:  Create New Ctests

Let's now dive into the heart of your assignment - the creation of the Ctests (mostly creation of configuration values for the Ctests, with some potential test revisions).

Many software tests can be directly used as Ctest as exemplified in Step 1.2. However, not all software tests can be effortlessly transformed into Ctests due to hard-coded logic and oracles specific to a configuration value.

1) Test Selection :

In this task, you need to create 2 Ctests . Substitute "marinov" with your NetID in the command below, and select the tests  sequentially :

2) Ctest Validation:

For each chosen test, c heck whether the test has hard-coded logic and oracles specific to a configuration value.

  • To check it, y ou need to check  all the parameters  for this test in the mapping ( You can find here  the mapping file  that would be generated in a previous step).
  • For each parameter, try a few different values with  the same type  as the default values  to see whether the test will pass or fail. You probably want to  automate some of this work as it can be rather tedious to do it all manually.
  • If the test cannot be directly used as a Ctest, because it fails for many/all GOOD values besides the default value, then revise the test as per "3) Test Revision", or simple skip this test and go to the next chosen test.
  • For each test that you make a Ctest, a dd your results to the  mp2.csv file following the format of ctest_metadata.tsv   and push it to your repo .

Note1:  Your file should have the following columns (but separated with TAB not comma, because some values may have a comma):                             REPO, SHA, CONFIG_PARAMETER, TEST_NAME, VALUE, TYPE(GOOD|BAD), RESULT(PASS|FAIL), COVERAGE_CHANGE(YES|NO)                             https://github.com/apache/hadoop.git ,  a3b9c37a397ad4188041dd80621bdeefc46885f2,  Parameter you choose , org.apache.hadoop.TestClass#testMethod, CS527, GOOD, PASS, YES                             .....................                  Note2: Reminder that a GOOD value is one for which the test is expected to pass, and a BAD value is one for which the test is expected to fail.                          But a test may not behave as expected:

  • 1)  A "GOOD" value might cause a test failure due to hard-coded logics or oracles.
  • 2)  A test might pass even with a "BAD" value, often because the test can't detect this incorrect value.

Note3:  The COVERAGE column refers to the 'coveredmethods' metric in the Clover report. The 'coveredmethods' might fluctuate even with the same value, without any change (in other wods, the coverage can be non-deterministic or "flaky", even for the same code and same configuration). Therefore, we want a difference of at least 10 covered methods to signify a coverage change.

TASK 1 : (Correctness):  For  each  parameter, list in mp2.csv a minimum of three distinct GOOD values (excluding default ones) that result in a  Ctest  pass .  If a parameter's value is boolean (or if it offers fewer than three possible values), it suffices to list only two values, e.g., true and false.  For some parameters, it can be difficult to find the values (e.g., mostly due to poor documentation or the default value being empty so it’s hard for you to mutate), so you would need to check how the parameters are used in the code.

TASK2 :   (Effectiveness): For each Ctest ,  list in mp2.csv at least one instance where the Ctest fails due to at least one BAD value (should be the same type as the default value) associated with a parameter. If you can list more than one, it's even better. :)

TASK3 : (False Negative or Inconsistency):  For each Ctest, list in mp2.csv  at least one instance where, regardless of whether a value is GOOD or BAD, the Ctest passes but the coverage differs ( which means the metric  coveredstatements   has diff > 10 compared with the default value) .  If you can list more than one, it's even better. :)

TASK4 : (Analysis of False Negative or Inconsistency ):  For  each  instance found in TASK3, document the detailed explanation in mp2.md .

  • If the value is GOOD, explain  why there's a disparity in coverage compared to the default value and cite the relevant sections of the Hadoop code that justify your observations .
  • If the value is BAD , explain  why there's a disparity in coverage compared to the default value and cite the relevant sections of the Hadoop code.  Moreover, clarify why the Ctest does not fail despite the BAD value and the coverage difference.

3) Test Revision:

Optionally, if one of your chosen tests in the previous step cannot be easily turned into a Ctest, then you can rewrite the test (or proceed to the next chosen test). Rewrite the test so that it can be used as a Ctest for the parameters it exercises (excluding the parameters that the test resets). Sections 4.3 and 5.4 from the  Ctest paper  present examples of rewriting tests into Ctests. If you revise the test code, generate the patch named mp2.patch (if you don't know how to generate the patch file, please follow the instruction  online ) and push it to your repo.  If you believe the test cannot be rewritten into a Ctest, choose another test. If you modify two (or more) tests, add all the changes into just one mp2.patch .

Step 1.5:  Report your results

Git add+commit+push mp2.csv, mp2.md , and optionally mp2.patch  to the root path of your cs527 repo (i.e., the location should be "https://gitlab.engr.illinois.edu/lian7/cs527/-/blob/main/mp2.csv" but replace "lian7" with your NetID).

  • mp2.csv : Your result should satisfy correctness and effectiveness . Please add your results to mp2.csv file following the format of  ctest_metadata.csv .
  • mp2.md : You should put the result of the small tasks (step 1.2) to the first line and document the analysis (task4) subsequently.
  • optional mp2.patch : If you revise the original test, please generate the patch named mp2.patch . Examples can be found here . Please base your work on a3b9c37a397ad4188041dd80621bdeefc46885f2 .
  • Can I use the latest SHA for Hadoop? No, please use the SHA for rel/release-3.3.1 (a3b9c37a397ad4188041dd80621bdeefc46885f2) .

How can I find the default value of a configuration parameter? You can refer to the file to search the default value.

If you want to learn more about configuration tests, you may want to read/skim some research papers. First, you may check these resources for how to read research papers in general, and how to write papers in software engineering or systems:

[1] How to Read an Engineering Research Paper by William G. Griswold

[2] Writing Good Software Engineering Research Papers by Mary Shaw (ICSE 2003)

[3] How (and How Not) to Write a Good Systems Paper by Roy Levin and David D. Redell ( ACM SIGOPS Operating Systems Review, 1983)

You may also read/skim papers more related to your task:

[3]  Test Selection for Unified Regression Testing  by  Shuai Wang, Xinyu Lian, Darko Marinov, and Tianyin Xu (ICSE 2023)

Part 2: Bonus Points for discussing difficulties in Your Software Development and Testing

Deliverable:  mp2-difficulties.md  in your cs527 repo

In  mp2-difficulties.md , list at least  two  difficulties that you often encounter during software development – design, implementation, documentation, building, testing, debugging, maintenance, or otherwise.  At least one of the difficulties should be related to building and testing software.  For each such difficulty, discuss the underlying cause. Is there some way that automated tools could help? If applicable, describe your own experience on how you alleviated/solved this problem, especially if you use some automated tool for your solution.

Below are some examples. You should come up with your own. Your list need not be nearly this long, but each item should be  more substantial . Discuss the problem: motivate why people should care about it, explain why it is not easy to solve or work around, and brainstorm some possible solutions.

  • ((Flaky tests are already covered in MP1 in 2023)) Some test failures are not due to the bugs in the code under test but due to bugs in the test code or build infrastructure. Such tests are often called "flaky tests". (For one study of flaky tests and one tool that finds some kind of flaky tests, you can skim through these papers:  An Empirical Analysis of Flaky Tests  or  Detecting Assumptions on Deterministic Implementations of Non-deterministic Specifications .)
  • Large, comprehensive test suites tend to take a long time to execute. That may discourage developers from using them as frequently as they ought to, or may slow them down waiting for tests to complete when they could be moving on to other tasks. (For some example ideas on speeding up test execution, you can skim through these papers:  An Extensive Study of Static Regression Test Selection in Modern Software Evolution  or  Optimizing Test Placement for Module-Level Regression Testing .)
  • Test suites are crucial for preventing bugs and improving confidence in programs, but are difficult and tedious to create and maintain. (For an example older project in helping with test maintenance, see  ReAssert: Suggesting Repairs for Broken Unit Tests .)
  • Some program analyses produce so much output that it is difficult or time-consuming to separate the useful information from spurious reports, lengthy/redundant information, or even false alarms that do not point to real bugs but stem from the imprecision of the tool. (For an example evaluation of one kind of analysis, you can skim through this paper:  How Good are the Specs? A Study of the Bug-Finding Effectiveness of Existing Java API Specifications .)
  • Setting up a consistent build environment can be rather hard as it needs to ensure that the right platform is used (the right OS, the right libraries, the right versions, the right dependencies). Containers and virtual machines help, but even they require some set up.
  • Reusing code requires an understanding of its behavior. Most code is not documented, however. This lack of specifications and documentation makes it difficult to use the code and difficult to know its assumptions or operational parameters (the values over which it has been tested and is known to work).
  • In dynamically-typed languages, it is easy to apply illegal operations to data, and for such errors to be latent for long periods until some input exposes them. Even if easily reproducible, they might be exposed only after other long-running computations, making them difficult to detect. This sort of error is particularly frequent when accessing deeply-nested data structures: it is easy to forget one level of dereference.
  • Large components are often more worth reusing than small ones. However, they are also more likely to make assumptions (such as that they control execution of the program, that there is no need for thread safety, or that batch processing is acceptable) that may not be acceptable to an integrator who wishes to use these large components.

Avoid discussing implementation annoyances unless you can identify an underlying principle. (Example: "Windows (or GNU/Linux) lacks this feature that GNU/Linux (or Windows) has.") Avoid mentioning difficulties in performing tasks that don't matter. (Example: "I can't determine the cyclomatic complexity of my Tcl code." Not many people care about cyclomatic complexity or Tcl.) Avoid problems that are extremely minor or that can be solved easily. (Example: "I often fail to balance delimiters before attempting to compile a file." This costs only a few moments of compile time, and a few lines of Emacs Lisp or another modern IDE can detect this when you write a file to disk, saving even more time.)

1 bonus point will be awarded for the qualified answer ( Note:   you need to list at least TWO difficulties). If you submit careful thought about very interesting problems and issues, you will get 2 bonus points. In particular, if you discuss good ideas here, they could lead to identifying your course project.
