SSRG International Journal of Thermal Engineering ( SSRG - IJTE ) is a scholarly double-blind peer-reviewed research publishing Journal.

Aim and Scope:

SSRG International Journal of Thermal Engineering - IJTE disseminates applied novel research about the development and demonstration of components, equipment, technologies and systems involving thermal processes for the production, storage, utilization, and conservation of energy and focuses on the dissemination of information of permanent interest in applied thermal sciences and engineering emphasizing new and emerging technologies, significant questions, pressing problems and concerns, and new methods and approaches that can be applied to industrial problems. It complements the Journal of Heat Transfer, which focuses on fundamental research.

Contributions must have clear relevancy to an industry, an industrial process, or a device. Subject areas could be as narrow as a particular phenomenon or device or as broad as a system. The Journal publishes original research of an applied nature; application of thermal sciences to processes or systems; technology reviews; and identification of research needs to solve industrial problems at all time and length scales. Contributions should describe research in applied areas pertaining to thermal energy transport in equipment and devices, thermal and chemical systems, and thermodynamic processes.

Applied Thermal Engineering

Applied Thermal Engineering publishes original, high-quality research papers and ancillary features, spanning activities ranging from fundamental research to trouble-shooting in existing plant and equipment. System design covers energy use both in buildings, including passive thermal design techniques, and in the process industries. For the latter, the design problems associated with the integration of components into overall plant are also covered. The journal will feature aspects of the thermal engineering of advanced processes, including process integration, intensification and development, together with the application of thermal equipment in conventional process plant, which includes its use for heat recovery. A wide range of equipment will be relevant to Applied Thermal Engineering, such as heat exchangers (compact and advanced designs), heat pumps and refrigeration plant, heat pipes, combined heat and power and advanced cycles, heat transfer enhancement as applied to the above, and other unit operations involving thermal engineering procedures. Economics plays a necessary role in the assessment of many thermal engineering projects. Submissions devoted to or considering the financial implications of equipment designs are welcome. Biographical Sketch: Carlos A. Ríos Ocampo is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he has led the Photonic Materials & Devices groups since 2021. Before joining UMD, Carlos was a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT, received a DPhil (PhD) degree in 2017 from the University of Oxford (UK), an MSc degree in Optics and Photonics in 2013 from the KIT (Germany), and a BSc in Physics in 2010 from the University of Antioquia (Colombia). Carlos’s scientific interests focus on studying and developing new on-chip technologies driven by the synergy between nanomaterials and photonics.

Title: chain-of-thought reasoning without prompting.

Abstract: In enhancing the reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs), prior research primarily focuses on specific prompting techniques such as few-shot or zero-shot chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting. These methods, while effective, often involve manually intensive prompt engineering. Our study takes a novel approach by asking: Can LLMs reason effectively without prompting? Our findings reveal that, intriguingly, CoT reasoning paths can be elicited from pre-trained LLMs by simply altering the \textit{decoding} process. Rather than conventional greedy decoding, we investigate the top-$k$ alternative tokens, uncovering that CoT paths are frequently inherent in these sequences. This approach not only bypasses the confounders of prompting but also allows us to assess the LLMs' \textit{intrinsic} reasoning abilities. Moreover, we observe that the presence of a CoT in the decoding path correlates with a higher confidence in the model's decoded answer. This confidence metric effectively differentiates between CoT and non-CoT paths. Extensive empirical studies on various reasoning benchmarks show that the proposed CoT-decoding substantially outperforms the standard greedy decoding.
