How to create your personal strategic plan

A personal strategic plan is a clear plan for achieving your goals. The exercise of creating your own personal strategic plan can help you identify what’s most important to you and can define what success means to you.

This article is part of my article series 5 Key Principles for Intentional Living  and provides a step by step process for creating your own personal strategic plan. It also discusses the benefits of creating a personal strategic plan. This includes getting really clear about what’s most important to you. Also included is a personal strategic plan example.

What is a strategic plan?

Strategic plans are common with businesses, nonprofits, and government organizations. They act as a compass for the organization and are typically a one-page document. A strategic plan is a clear road map for where the organization wants to be, and includes its core focus areas and actions.

What are the benefits of creating a personal strategic plan?

Like organizations, a personal strategic plan can be your compass. It can help you be intentional and proactive in reaching your goals. Not only that, creating your own plan will help you identify the goals that are most in line with what you truly want to become and what you want your life to become. Further, a personal strategic plan can be a planning tool for you to achieve your version of an extraordinary life. It can also help you achieve your own definition of success.

The process of creating your own plan can help you define what success means to you. Success means different things for different people. I believe that success is defined as achieving the goals that are in line with our core values and what’s most important to us.

A strategic plan can help you identify focused objectives and goals for you to work toward, and help you reach your version of success. A personal strategic plan moves you forward. As a key planning tool, a strategic plan becomes your action plan for a set period of time. Thus, I suggest creating a one or two-year personal strategic plan, and revisiting and revising it once a year.

Personal strategic plan example

I developed a strategic plan for the last organization I worked for. It was a very small program, and I learned a lot from the process. Thus, I decided to create my own personal strategic plan. This personal strategic plan will guide me for the next year. It will help me to stay focused on what I decided my largest priorities are and what I want to accomplish. A link to my personal strategic plan example is provided below. Please take a look and use it as a guide for creating your own personal strategic plan.

Personal strategic plan elements.

A personal strategic plan has the following elements:

  • Personal purpose statement
  • Personal vision statement
  • Top 5 personal core values
  • Strategic focus areas
  • Objectives and SMART goals for each focus area

Steps to creating your personal strategic plan

You’ll want to set aside a good chunk of personal time in a location free of distractions. You may need to schedule a few different blocks of time for the different steps. It probably took me a total of 4 hours and four different blocks of time. You’ll want to have a notebook, notepad, or your journal, and your favorite writing utensil handy.

Step 1: Download your free personal strategic plan template

I have created a personal strategic plan template just for you. You can use it to easily fill in the elements as you go. This free template is in the same format as my example personal strategic plan . To get the free template, fill in your email in the form below and it will be sent directly to your inbox.

Step 2: Identify your top 5 personal core values

The starting point for developing your personal strategic plan is to assess and define your personal core values. Defining your core values will ensure the strategic plan you create is the right plan for achieving what’s most important to you. Personal values are what we care about most in life and are signified by words that resonate deep in our hearts.

For step by step guidance on defining your top 5 persona core values, see my article: Personal core values assessment: Success and fulfillment begins with determining what you value in life

Are you leading a team at work?

Improve your team skills now. Do you want to be better at coaching staff? Do you find it hard to give honest feedback? Get this book.

Step 3: identify your 3 strategic areas of focus.

Your 3 strategic areas of focus should be the most important areas of your life that you want to focus on and prioritize this coming year.

First, you’ll want to identify the most important areas of your life. You can keep your top 5 personal core values in mind as you begin. On a blank sheet of paper list at least 5, but no more than 7 most important areas of your life. You can use the list below as guidance, but there may be areas you come up with that are not on the list. If you come up with more than 7, try combining two areas into one. For example, I combined Family and Community into one area.

Areas of Life

Next, you’ll determine how balanced your most important areas of life are. Draw a circle and slice it like a pie with the total number of slices representing each of your important areas of life. Next, write your most important areas of life in each of the slices. You should not have more than 7 slices.

For each slice of the pie, guesstimate how much of your time (using percentages) you currently spend on each of the important areas of your life. Then add the percentages to the slices. The slices should add up to 100%.

Next, reflect on each area of your life. Consider if there are one or more areas that have been more neglected or out of balance from other areas, or don’t receive as much of your time as you’d like. Put a star next to the important areas of life where you would like to put more focus and get more in balance with. Think about what is most important to you right now. What would you most like to focus on over the next year or two? For example, perhaps your career is going well, so in the next year you would like to put more focus on health and fitness.

Last, choose three of the areas of your life you would like to focus on over the next year or two. These will become your strategic areas of focus in your personal strategic plan. In Step 6 below, you’ll learn how to create specific objectives and SMART goals for each of these three areas of focus.

Here are my 3 strategic areas of focus over the next two years:

  • Family & Community
  • Passion Projects & Financial Freedom
  • Health, Fitness, and Adventure

Step 4: Write your personal purpose statement

The definition of purpose is the reason for which something exists. A personal purpose statement describes your intention and the impact you want to make in the world. It also defines who you are. Having a purpose in life is what gets you out of bed in the morning.

Again, like your values, your purpose statement is aligned with what is important to you and aligned with your core values. A personal purpose statement is a clear and concise action statement of one or two sentences. In addition, a purpose statement is aligned with and creates a target for your goals in life.

As an example, my personal purpose statement is: To inspire and guide others to live their version of an extraordinary life.

Maybe you have already articulated your purpose in life, but if you haven’t, this is a key step toward living an intentional life. Your purpose is a large part of who you are. In many cases, one’s purpose statement is related to their career and making a difference through their life work. If you don’t already have an identified purpose, follow these steps to create your own personal purpose statement.

First, grab a blank sheet of paper and reflect on these questions:

  • What am I passionate about?
  • What most inspires me?
  • What gets me out of bed in the morning?
  • What do I want to be remembered for?
  • How do I want to make a difference in the world?
  • What do I do and why do I do it?

Next, draft your purpose statement. Write it in the present tense. Make it positive and action-oriented. Also, write it as concise as possible. Rewrite your statement as many times as you need to refine it until it feels just right.

For additional examples of personal purpose statements, check out this article: Examples of Life Purpose Statements

Step 5: Write your personal vision statement

A vision statement represents what you wish to become or wish your life to be like. It is aspirational. It also embodies what your future self and future life will look like.

This next step helps you get in touch with your vision for the future. It is an inspirational statement. Moreover, it is a sentence or paragraph that captures who you would like to be, do, and have, and it reflects your values and aspirations. Also, it defines what it will be like to be living your ideal life and will guide your way.

Here’s an example of the vision statement my husband and I came up with when we were still a few years away from realizing our current life of travel: The freedom to explore new places, passions, and opportunities while connecting with others and enriching our lives.

My own personal vision statement is: To live a long healthy and fulfilling life and to have the financial freedom to pursue my passions

To create your own personal vision statement:

  • Take a few moments with a blank sheet of paper and jot down what comes to mind when you imagine what you aspire your future life to look like. Write down your intentions and review your values. Write down what you would like to do, to be, and to have in your life.
  • Next summarize your ideas and create a vision statement that is as concise as possible. Then rewrite your statement as many times as you need to refine it until it feels just right.

Step 6: Determine your objectives and SMART goals

For your three focus areas, identify one or more objectives. An objective is a target or intention. For example, for my Health, Fitness, and Adventure strategic area of focus, one objective is to reach and maintain good physical fitness so I can enjoy an active lifestyle. Your objectives are attainable and they can also be something that you want to maintain or sustain.

For each objective, identify one or more SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time bound.

For my objective to reach and maintain good physical fitness so I can enjoy an active lifestyle, here are my specific SMART goals:

Goal 1: Get at least 70,000 steps or equivalent per week (average of 10,000 steps per day)

Goal 2: Do a full body strengthening workout at least 3 times per week

Both SMART goals are specific. They are measurable, which means I know whether I have achieved them each week or not. I have also determined that they are achievable and realistic given my abilities. These goals are also time bound, in that they include what I need to do each week.

I encourage you to read my article on SMART goals:  Achieving your ideal life starts with planning and setting SMART goals . This article further explains what SMART goals are and how to create them. What’s more, it provides a SMART goal template and additional SMART goal examples.

Step 7: Put it all together on one page

Place all the elements of your personal strategic plan on one page. You can get creative and hand write your template or use my free personal strategic plan template. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, sign up to receive it below.

Once you have created your personal strategic plan, print it and place it in a prominent place. You could even frame it and hang it in your office. In addition, you could put a copy in your planner or store it on your smart phone.

Make a weekly date with yourself to review your personal strategic plan and create a weekly plan that will move you toward reaching the SMART goals outlined in your plan. For example, I like to schedule a date with myself for at least an hour every Friday afternoon to review my personal strategic plan. This is also a good time for me to reflect on my week and to set goals for the next week.

Make a plan to revisit your personal strategic plan each new year or on your birthday. Then review and revise it annually, even if it is a two-year plan.

A personal strategic plan is simply a guide that can help a person track his career-related goals. It serves as a constant reminder and assurance that the things he is aiming for in his profession are in alignment with the things that truly matter to him in his personal life. In other words, a personal strategic plan can help you grow as a career person and as a normal human being.

A strategic plan’s main objective is to steer an organization toward their professional goals , and to make sure that they don’t stray from it. Similarly, a personal strategic plan serves as a guide for a person both in his personal and professional life. It is specifically designed to remind and anchor a person to the aspects of his life that are most important to him.

A personal strategic plan often includes career concerns, financial issues, health matters, and key relationships. However, depending on the priorities of the person, it can also contain travel plans, political aims, or spiritual development. You may also see strategic planning checklist examples .

A strategic plan gives a person the chance to take a step back and look at his life as a whole. By doing so, he can criticize its many aspects and learn where he can grow and what he can change to be able to take the greatest satisfaction out of the life he is living. Creating a personal strategic plan is purely knowing precisely what you want and being determined to get it. You may also like business development strategy plan examples .

A strategic plan is a lot like a bucket list, or a resolution. But it is far more specific and rigorous. Bucket lists are so easily forgotten and are often too unrealistic to be realized.

Resolutions, on the other hand, are changes that are too substantial. They frequently include trying to change some very big part of a person’s life such as their bad habits or the negative parts of their personalities. But what we seldom understand is that changing ourselves and our lives don’t work like that. You may also see sales strategy plan examples .

You can’t simply put in writing a sizable part of your lifestyle that what you want to change and expect it to happen a week later.

Bucket lists, resolutions, all these things are too impractical. Personal strategic plans are the exact opposite. They are pragmatic and realistic which can help you avoid creating expectations that are too impossible to reach. You may also like maintenance strategy plan examples .

Personal strategic plans can also show you a step-by-step process to reach your goal because there is nothing quick about change. You need to work for it and toward it with accuracy and assiduity, and these are things that only an effective personal strategic plan can achieve for you. Creating a Personal Strategic Plan

1. evaluate your current situation..

Before you proceed to committing yourself to making drastic changes in your life, first, take a good look at it. By doing so, you can recognize exactly where you are and compare it to where you want to be. You may also see marketing strategy plan examples .

To assess your present life, here are a few questions you can ask yourself:

  • Are you happy with the reality that you are living?
  • Are you satisfied with your job and your relationship with the people in your life?
  • Are there people and bonds you need to try harder to strengthen?
  • Are there people and bonds you need to sever because it is no longer healthy for you?
  • What are the goals and visions you have for yourself?
  • Will your routine help you achieve that?
  • What are the activities you want to pursue in life?
  • What are the activities you need to stop doing?
  • Do you have principles you stand up for?
  • If you do, are you living up to them? And if you don’t, don’t you think you need one?
  • What is your reason for existence? Is there even any?
  • What are your strengths as a person? And how can you use these strengths to get where you want?
  • With your choices and actions, where do you think you will be five years from now?
  • In comparison, where do you want yourself to be five years from now?
  • Are the activities you are committing yourself to directing you there or not?

Answering these questions may not always be easy because they force us to face the things in our life that we are so scared to acknowledge. But to be able to move forward, these questions are important.

We need to reevaluate our present situation for us to determine just how far we have to go and just how hard we have to try to get there. Once these questions are thoroughly and honestly answered, we can now proceed to creating a personal strategic plan specially designed to cater to the changes you want to see in yourself. 2. Start creating a strategic plan by knowing what you want.

You cannot achieve a goal you have not made for yourself, which means that for you to be able to do this right, you have to recognize the things you want to accomplish so you can work your way toward them. And as you do this, be specific as possible. Look at the different divisions in your life: your career, your health and lifestyle, your relationships and social group, your sense of self. You may also check out communication strategy plan examples .

These are some of the most important aspects you should focus on.

Questions to ask yourself about your line of profession:

  • The most important question you should ask yourself to assess every important detail in your life is this: Are you happy? And not just a “Yeah, I’m happy” but a “Yes! I feel ecstatic. There is nothing I’d rather be doing than this job right here.” If your answer is more of the former, or something in between, then it’s time that you change some things. You might be interested in networking strategy plan examples .
  • If you’re not happy with your job, what can you do to change that?
  • Would you consider a different field of profession?
  • Are you aiming for a promotion? If not, shouldn’t you?

Your job is perhaps the main thing that you are going to do during your life. Shouldn’t it be something worth your while? Getting up early every morning to go to a job you don’t enjoy is already hard work in itself, and it is one of the most unhealthy things you can do. So for your strategic plan, start by writing the things you want to achieve professionally. You may also see social media strategy plan examples .

Questions to ask yourself about your health and lifestyle:

  • Are you taking care of yourself?
  • Are you eating healthy?
  • Are you exercising?
  • Are you sleeping well?
  • Do you have any unhealthy habits that may have a direct impact on your health such as chain smoking and too much alcohol intake?
  • Are you often stressed out?

Concerns about your lifestyle is not limited to the amount of carbs you have taken each day. Although this is one of your concerns, it is not the only one you should focus on. Health can also refer to your state mentally. Are you overthinking and overstressing lately? If so, what are the factors that contribute to it? You should include this in your strategy plan as well. You may also see  HR strategy plan examples .

Questions to ask yourself about your relationships:

  • Are the people in your life helping you to achieve the things you want or are they constantly bringing you down?
  • Do the people in your life surround you with love and optimism or the opposites of it?
  • Is there any person who you think is restricting your personal growth?
  • Are you helping the people in your life achieve the things they want or are you constantly bringing them down?
  • Do you surround the people in your life with love and optimism or the opposites of it?
  • Are you a person who restricts other people’s growth?

Relationships are very important in our lives. Unfortunately, they are also often overlooked. Let your personal strategic plan remind you to look at the people you hold dear in your life while also looking at how you treat them. Personal strategic plans are all about growth, development, and direction. And the people we spend the most time with have a great impact on that. You may also like  simple business plan examples .

Questions to ask yourself about yourself:

  • What is it that you truly want to do?
  • What are the things that are truly important to you?
  • What are your values?
  • What can make you happy?
  • What can make you feel contented?
  • What can motivate you to succeed?

The amount of progress you are going to reach will largely depend on these questions. Even if you have the ability to create the best, most effective strategic plan in the world, if you cannot answer that very first question you were asked, you can only go so far. You may also check out risk plan examples .

A personal strategic plan can only work because you know what you want. Otherwise, you’re just randomly listing things you do not have the attitude to achieve because they aren’t really what will make you feel successful and happy.

3. Identify the specific steps you need to undertake to reach your goal.

This is where a strategic plan differs from all other goal-oriented written scheme: it is explicit to a fault, which is its greatest advantage. You can’t simply write down a goal and expect yourself to be awesome enough to achieve it with a snap of your fingers. They are called goals because you actually need to exert effort to achieve them. You may also see work plan examples & samples .

Say your strategic plan includes “Improve Personal Relationships.” Set defined steps on how you can do that. Start small because they are often the safest and most sure way of getting somewhere. For your goal, maybe you can decide to have dinner at least once a week or every two weeks, depending on your schedule, with the most important people in your life like your family. You may also like weekly plan examples .

Although this seems like a small effort, in the long run, it can do wonders for your relationships. A lot of good things can happen on the dinner table.

Identifying the steps you need to take to get to where you want is pretty easy. The challenge, however, is in executing them. But if you ever find yourself wavering for even the tiniest bit, simply try to picture yourself living your goal.

4. Be rigorous in observing the steps.

This is the only way for your personal strategic plan to work. If you are not ready to do the best that you can to make your goals happen, then be content to live in mediocrity.

Realizing goals is not going to be easy. Every step of it is going to be excruciating and laborious. But once you’re through with it all, once you’re already standing where you want to be—whether in your job or in your intimate relationships—it’s going to be worth every step. The Personal Strategic Plan Inspired By a Harvard Business Legend

This five-step personal strategic planning exercise applies best practices from the business world to your life.

' src=

One of my favorite books I’ve read recently is How Will You Measure Your Life?

In it, Harvard Business School strategy guru Clayton Christensen applies his world-renowned theories to the business of living a good life. He looks to get to the bottom of this question:

Why have so many CEOs he’s known succeeded at business but run their personal lives to the ground?

The biggest reason: Self-help-ing yourself is way more boring than making billions. Big shot CEOs strategize business moves in meetings all day long, but never bother to fit any semblance of a personal strategic plan into their schedule. Eventually, their lives go kaput.

Christensen convinced me to try not to make the same mistake. So I followed the advice from his book and others like it— The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People , especially—to devise a personal strategic plan of my own.

I call it the “GPS” (general personal strategy).

It’s a five-step template that’s helped me figure out how to redirect my life toward not billions of dollars but more anti-regrets and an enjoyably fulfilling life .

General Personal Strategy (GPS) for [Insert Your Name Here]

To maximize My Life’s returns to (Step 1) , I will optimize for (Step 2) and do some good by battling (Step 3) . To do so more productively, I will release my handbrake of (Step 4.1) and replace it with (Step 4.2) . And I am starting work on all of this immediately by (Step 5) .

my personal strategic plan example

Personal Strategic Plan Step #1:

Think of your shareholders..

I like the perspective of looking at your life as if you’re the CEO of Your Life, Inc. You’re the head honcho responsible for delivering results to my shareholders.

Who are your shareholders?

Unless you got a bit ahead of yourself with the whole NFT craze and sold shares of yourself online, I’d argue your shareholders aren’t other people. Not even your kids or wife.

Your shareholders are future versions of you.

Imagine each Future You for every day left in your life has one voting share. They want themselves and the people they care about to be happy. Then ask yourself:

What action would the largest number of your thousands of shareholders vote in favor of?

Keep in mind that your shareholders understand what you’re incapable of. They won’t expect you to change the world in a day. Plus, they don’t want you to work so hard that it makes them miserable when it’s their turn to take the reins.

Today, it’s your turn. To be a better CEO, just try to be less selfish and more shareholder-friendly. Then tomorrow, it’s up to the next version of you to take over and do the same.

More on this:

The who-not-how strategy for holding yourself accountable, the ultimate guide to befriending your future self.

Personal Strategic Plan Step #2:

Define your kpi.

Ok, so you want to maximize long-term returns to your future selves, a.k.a. your shareholders.

What KPI (key performance indicator) are you using to measure how good or bad of a job you’re doing?

Consider this chart roughly approximating your life’s performance to date:

my personal strategic plan example

Your “Max Potential” is the absolute highest return you could possibly deliver to your shareholders in your lifetime. Time is your x-axis. And the big question is:

What’s your y-axis?

Happiness? Balance? Sense of community? Freedom? Buckets of Häagen-Dasz consumed?

There’s no easy answer. There’s not even a definitively correct answer. But it shouldn’t be too hard for you to come up with something better than what our monkey minds default to: money, sex, and power.

Even a rough KPI for your y-axis will help you make better long-run decisions. When in doubt, use it to ask yourself:

What action will direct me higher up my y-axis?

For example, I think my y-axis is “Growth.” So, by prioritizing growth over money, I decided to challenge myself to write this post instead of some money-grubbing article like, “Why starting a blog by using all these affiliate links will get you the passive-income life of your dreams.”

How to find the best measure for success in your life.

Personal Strategic Plan Step #3:

Pick your battle.

This personal strategic planning step is triply counterintuitive, so lots of people skip it or screw it up.

Counter-intuition #1: To enjoy life, you need to struggle.

Without conflict, the story of your life will have no plot. And, as Donald Miller puts it in one of my favorite “sledgehammer” books , “If you aren’t telling a good story, nobody thinks you died too soon; they just think you died.”

To make matters worse, if you don’t pick your struggles, struggles you don’t want will find you.

Counter-intuition #2: Happiness doesn’t come from trying to make yourself happy but as a by-product of helping others get happier.

This is called the Hedonistic Paradox.

My favorite question for dealing with it and figuring out in what way you can help yourself by helping others is this:

What’s an injustice in the world that pisses you off and you’re willing and able to take on?

Counter-intuition #3: The best battles to pick are the ones you cannot win.

Rather than pick some dragon to slay, mountain to climb, or step-mom to hate, lick your finger, stick it in the air, and look for a headwind. It probably won’t ever stop blowing in your face, but you can harness it to make meaningful progress against it while enjoying the ride.

My battle, for example, is with the status quo and the social pressures and forces of complacency that support it. I’ll never defeat the status quo, but I’ve been having a wicked good time taking it on so far. And I like to think some people have benefitted from it.

What do you think your battle could be?

8 Clues to Follow for Finding Your Purpose in Life

If you can’t find a job you love, ask yourself these questions.

Cover image of me finding and releasing self-limiting beliefs

Personal Strategic Plan Step #4:

Release your handbrake.

After the first three pie-in-the-sky personal strategic planning steps, it’s time to bring things back down to earth with this question:

What self-limiting belief holds you back from making more efficient progress?

This is your handbrake. Release it and your life will flow much more smoothly.

Step 4.1: Identify the limiting identity that’s your biggest handbrake.

Try these handbrake diagnostinacators:

  • e.g., If it stings when someone says, “You’re a coward,” it’s probably true. Or maybe you’re protecting some limiting identity of being perfect or successful by not taking more risks.
  • e.g., Thinking, “I’m smart.” That will make you defensive to evidence that you’re wrong and lead you to avoid challenging your self-perceived intelligence. Better to identify as “someone who likes to learn.”
  • e.g., “I’m too old to take on a personal strategic plan” means your age has become a limiting identity for you.
  • If we were to survey your family members and colleagues, do you think they would say the same?

Step 4.2: Find an accelerating identity to put in its place.

A good accelerating identity:

  • Pushes you forward rather than holds you back.
  • Is consistent with your core values and inconsistent with the limiting identity you’re releasing.
  • Expands your potential rather than restricts it.
  • Is something you genuinely believe you can live up to.

The last point is worth emphasizing. No matter how many positive affirmations you perform, you can’t “be anything you want.” You’re not that genetically gifted.

For example, a limiting identity I used to have is “I’m antisocial.” Positively affirming, “I’m a people person,” in the mirror ten times every morning would never have worked. The more realistic maximizing identity that’s done the trick is to focus on being more of something I already was: “fun to be around.”

Now your turn. Come up with answers to Steps 4.1 and 4.1 and fill in the blanks:

I’m not going to be _____ anymore. I’m _____.

The Formula I Follow to Release My Limiting Beliefs

Personality vs. identity: how to find your right fit.

Personal Strategic Plan Step #5:

Stop planning and get started.

Your personal strategic plan is nothing more than self-help fantasizing without this step.

Pull your head out of your butt and get moving by asking yourself:

What one small daily action step can you easily make the time to commit to doing to make your plan a reality?

To find your answer, let’s break this question down:

  • What one… What’s the single action you want to start with? Stick to one behavior change. Then, only when your comfort zone has expanded around it, add another. And so on. Keep it up and, before you know it, you’ll have incorporated dozens of improvements, and your comfort zone will be formidable.
  • …small daily habit…: What’s something so easy you could commit to keeping up for a whole year? Increase your odds of success by simply trying to do it for a week or two. One month, max.
  • …can you easily make the time…: What will you quit doing to free up time and energy for this new action? It has to fit into your lifestyle or it’ll inevitably get squeezed back out.
  • …to commit to doing…: When will you stop to assess whether or not this habit is moving you in the right direction? Maintain flexibililty to change direction instead of putting your head down until you smash into a dead end.
  • …to make your plan a reality: What habit contributes toward steps 1, 2, 3, and 4? Be consistent and coherent to be productive.

Once you have something in mind, ask yourself this:

How can I make this 10 percent more fun?

Do it with friends? Plan a celebration to reward yourself after doing it for a month?

How Not to Fail Your Next 30-Day Challenge

How to flourish with a “garden” of daily habits, some plan is better than no plan.

Once again, here’s the GPS template with the five personal strategic plan components:

GPS for [Insert Your Name Here]

To optimize my life’s returns to my shareholders (Step 1) , I will optimize for (Step 2) and do some good by battling (Step 3) . To do so more productively, I will release my handbrake of (Step 4.1) and replace it with (Step 4.2) . And I am starting work on all of this immediately by (Step 5) .

Whether or not you decide to use this format doesn’t matter. It’s not like every CEO follows the same strategy, after all. You’re in charge of figuring out what works for you.

But, for your shareholders’ sake, hopefully the questions and explanations of each of the five steps have inspired you to prepare a personal strategic plan of your own. Better yet, use How Will You Measure Your Life as your resource.

Just plan something !

As long as you devise a strategy that gives you a slightly better sense of direction than before, move on it, review your progress, and update your plan accordingly, that’s progress.

Strategic Planning

Many of us are familiar with the process of strategic planning for our organizations.  These plans provide the identification of a desired future state/vision and goals and action steps to bridge the gap from where the organization is presently and provide tangible, actionable, and measurable steps to lead forward toward the desired vision.  Many local governments utilize strategic plans to guide business operations, and the practice is widely accepted as an organizational leading practice for high-performing organizations.

So, if strategic plans are so great for our local government organizations, why don’t we use the skills we have developed through implementing them in the workplace to identify our desired future and the goals and action steps necessary to achieve what we really want for ourselves?

Janice B. Gordon is a business growth expert, speaker, author, consultant, mentor, and a proponent of personal strategic planning.  In her article, “ How a Personal Strategic Plan Helps You Achieve Life’s Important Success Goals,” she defines personal strategic planning as “a disciplined thought process which creates important decision and actions that shape what is truly important to you, because of who you are and what you uniquely do and guides how, when and why you do it.”  She identifies the benefits of personal strategic planning as:

  • Gaining clarity of your core values, beliefs, and aspirations.
  • Focusing your energies on what is most important to you.
  • Creating balance and freedom and reducing uncertainty, anxiety, doubt, and fear.
  • Creating personal well-being by gaining more from your life choices.

In a recent ICMA Coaching Program webinar , the topic of personal strategic planning was discussed by three local government professionals and ICMA members—Jake Johansson, city manager, Port Orange, Florida; Susan Barbee, HR director, Leland, North Carolina; and Dallin Kimble, county administrative officer, Mariposa County, California—all of whom have personal experience and success with personal strategic plans. The panelists shared some great advice for local government professionals on this important topic, including:

  • Local government professionals who are interested in developing a personal strategic plan are encouraged to develop and maintain a “teachable mindset.”  This includes being open to new ideas and feedback from others and including that information as part of your strategic plan utilizing that information to “grow forward” in their personal and professional lives.
  • Goals (be sure to make them SMART—specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely).
  • Strategies/Objectives.
  • Prior to building your personal strategic plan, be sure to do an “environmental scan” where you check in with your current situation in life (where are you in your life, career, family life cycle?)  This is where you can conduct a personal SWOT analysis and be sure to include your personal life, not just your work.  And do not forget about truly understanding your core values in any personal assessment.
  • With the assistance of family, friends, coaches, and mentors to develop a personal vision statement that identifies where you would like to be in at various points in your life, both personally and professionally.   From there, you can begin to develop those goals, strategies, actions, and timelines necessary to achieve your personal vision.  Be sure to include those important people as part of your plan where appropriate. . .especially your family.
  • Track the accomplishment of your goals and strategies and make efforts to meet the timelines you have established for yourself.  Measuring your progress and taking appropriate actions to update/modify goals is important to your personal plan just as they are to an organizational strategic plan.    Of course, you can also modify your vision as changes in life and career come about.  Just remember that it is important to have a vision of where you want to be, regardless of how often that vision may be adjusted to address the realities of life.
  • Keep your eye on your personal vision and live your life with purpose.

Write It Down

Despite the many benefits of personal strategic plans, Gordon cites research from Dr. Gail Matthews of Dominican University’s Department of Psychology that found that people are 42% more likely to achieve their aspirations just by writing them down.  Further, 70% of people reported goal achievement by sending updates to a friend, compared to 35% who did not.

Unfortunately, in our busy work and personal lives, many people do not take the time to create a plan or even to write down their personal or professional goals. Even fewer people share their aspirations with friends or family.  Instead, we tend to work hard every day on short-term accomplishments and wonder why we do not make progress on the longer-term aspirations or those things that are important to us.

Local government managers who are interested in this concept are reminded of a very appropriate quote from Abraham Lincoln who said, “If we could first know where we are and where we are going, we could then better judge what to do and how to do it.”

Sounds great, right?  So, what is holding you back from creating your personal strategic plan?

“My Personal Strategic Plan” by Leo Lo

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.” ~ Henry Ford

“Everyone has a purpose in life. Perhaps yours is watching television.” ~ David Letterman

My Personal Strategic Plan (2012 – 2017):

Mission (why I exist) To live a fun, purposeful, and extraordinary life, and make a positive contribution to the world by inspiring others to do the same.

Vision (what I will be)

I will be the “me” that I have always aspired to be:

  • well traveled
  • adventurous and sophisticated in the art and science of gastronomy
  • a leader in my profession
  • a well-rounded person
  • compassionate
  • living my life without regrets.

Guiding Principles (how I will get there)

  • Lose 60 pounds to get to within the medically healthy weight range for my body frame. Then, I will completely revamp my wardrobe, and look amazing.
  • I have never been able to do splits in my life. It seems like an impossible thing for me to do. Therefore, if I could do it, when I am on the other side of 40, it would indicate that I am in better shape (at least in one aspect) than I have ever been.
  • After living in the U.S. on and off for many years, I finally became a U.S. citizen in 2007. Before that, I had very little interest in seeing America. I was much more interested in international travels. But something in me changed after the naturalization ceremony. Now I want to learn more about my adopted country by visiting all 50 states.
  • Tango in Buenos Aires; see a football match in Brazil; practice yoga in India; set foot on all 7 continents.
  • I went to boarding school in the U.K. when I was quite young, and thus missed out on spending time with my parents when I was growing up. They live in the U.S. now and I am fortunate to be able to see them more often, and as a result, I have a strong desire to understand them more deeply. I will visit their hometowns in southern China, the places where they grew up.  This will bring us closer together on many levels..
  • Hong Kong, where I grew up, is a food lover’s paradise, and one of my fondest childhood memories is eating the Baked Portuguese Chicken at this old school restaurant called Tai Ping Koon . I have not been back to Hong Kong in over 13 years, and I cannot help but feel very distant from my hometown. I want to reconnect with my youth by going to the same restaurant and having the same dish one more time.
  • experiencing culinary art at its highest form by dining at Chef René Redzepi’s Noma Restaurant in Copenhagen, Denmark;
  • perfecting my cooking skills by designing a 5-course gourmet meals and serving it to my friends; and
  • expanding my eating horizon by trying vegetarianism for a month.

Professional: I like to mix business with pleasure and I am very fortunate that I am able to develop my day job into something I really enjoy doing.

  • I am on a tenure track, and getting tenure would present a significant milestone.
  • I am in awe of those renaissance women and men who are experts in multiple fields, and I want to be like them when I grow up (… in 5 years).
  • Publishing and presenting on 5 different disciplines would be a good benchmark.
  • Earning an additional graduate degree would help too.
  • We all love those TedTalks . I aspire to be able to deliver at least one presentation of that caliber.

Well-Rounded: I have a lot of gaps in my knowledge, and I am a very curious person. Therefore, I want to be proactive in filling those gaps that I find interesting. I will learn:

  • Thai massage
  • how to iron a shirt
  • drive a stick shift
  • at least one ballroom dance.

Courageous: Fear has been the stumbling block in far too many instances in my life. I accept that it is natural to be afraid sometimes, but when fear stands in the way of achieving my goals, then I must find ways to overcome it. The best way to learn is to practice.

  • There are several things where I had an unpleasant experience once, and that has deterred me from ever trying them again. I will give them a second chance to conquer my fear: skiing and camping.

There are other things that are just scary to me, but I am determined to conquer that fear: skydiving; getting upside down and doing a handstand.

Compassionate: I accept that I am by nature a selfish person, and this is a selfish goal because it makes me feel good. But if I could benefit others in the process, then it’s definitely worth doing.

Over the years, many people, including many strangers, have told me that I have a good voice and I should use it. Hence, I will record an audio book for the blind. I will mentor someone. Anyone want to be my protégé?

It always makes me happy when people compliment me, and I always feel that I don’t do that for others enough. It takes courage and humility to pay sincere compliments, and I will pay more attention to everyday situations in order to do that more.

Artistic: I have the need to create, but more often than not, I lack the discipline. This must change.

I will publish a short story, write a book, a screenplay, and create a photo essay.

No Regrets: Regrets? They are the worst!

  • Must see Leo Messi, the best soccer player in the world, play in person
  • Must have my portrait painted
  • Must play this highly addictive computer game for 2 weeks straight without distraction
  • Must hold a baby panda
  • Must value chance encounters and get to know interesting people, and finally,
  • Must successfully start a slow clap .

I am showing you my actual personal strategic plan. It is an open template for everyone. My hope is that it will inspire you to think about some of the things you would like accomplish in your life.

This is my normal, and perhaps it will be your normal too.

Personal Strategic Plan to Achieve All Your Goals: Complete Guide

In a world that changes every minute, self-improvement would be the most outstanding contribution you can make to your future. Growing your mastery, honing soft skills, and building a clear vision of your goals are the keys that may open any door to you. Though, not everyone is so fond of planning and goal-setting processes. Survey has found that almost 75% of adults don't have a particular life plan. So basically, most people prefer to go with the flow, like "the smaller expectations, the less frustrated you get.

"Still, if such an approach doesn't lead you to the rock bottom of your career, then just imagine which heights you can reach with the strategic plan! You may think that such planning relates only to corporations and huge companies because any unforeseen oversight could cost them millions. But why should you be different?

Lack of a clear plan can lead you to the point where you waste years of your life on the career path you've never chosen. In turn, personal strategic planning is a smart tool to help you achieve your bold ambitions. Meanwhile, you may avoid the extra fuss and years wasted finding yourself and go straight to results.

Man working productively with a personal strategic plan

Today we're going to discover the essence of personal strategic planning - how it may help you pursue goals and keep the focus on what matters most. Dive in and build the strategy that will support you on your way to a flourishing career.

What is Personal Strategic Planning?

You may think that a personal strategic plan doesn't differ from the resolutions you set every New Year. Still, there's an enormous gap between them. These resolutions can be abstract, too distant from what you could actually achieve. They're more like utopian dreams, so no wonders only 16% of people fulfill them.

In turn, a personal strategic plan is like a step-by-step guide, easy to follow and helpful in times when you lose focus. It's a flexible set of your goals and tasks with precise time frames and steps for accomplishing them. Since it should be based on your strengths and weaknesses, this plan is more approachable, realistic, and actionable.

At the same time, a personal strategic plan is flexible - you can add new objectives or eliminate the old ones if they make little sense. It's not you living to fulfill the plan - the plan exists to meet your needs and support you on your way. Therefore, if you want to turn it into a tool, then make sure your strategic plan is:

Two persons building their personal strategic plans

Now, when you have a clear vision of personal strategic planning, let's figure out how to build your own strategy.

Five key elements of a personal strategic plan

Just putting your thoughts on a paper wouldn't work. A successful personal strategic plan consists of five essential elements - each of them contributes to the accomplishment of your ambitions. David Allen, a creator of the trending "Getting things done" method for staying productive, has described some of these elements (horizons) in his book. Our overview offers a complete step-by-step path to creating your personal strategic plan. Take a closer look at it.

Personal purpose statement

Most of us have a bigger picture of our future - someone imagines a successful career, others want to build a million-worth business. Set clearly who you want to be in your career and personal life. This statement reflects your core values and motto. It serves as a final stop on your path - at least for the following years. By confirming your personal mission statement, you'll find it easier to make decisions and decline the offers that won't help you achieve your goal.

A woman writing down her personal strategic plan

What would your life be like if you never had a personal mission statement? Here are some of the things that could happen. You may get stuck in jobs you don't enjoy. You could find yourself lonely and thinking about what other people think of you. You may take extra tasks that will eventually lead you to burnout. If you prefer to stop wasting your time on useless things, clear out your personal purpose statement and always keep it in mind when making decisions.

Personal action vision: long-term objectives

When you know your ultimate goal and keep in mind your ultimate purpose, it's time to build the vision of your actions for the long-term objections. Whether you want to become a top manager in your company or change a field, you need a plan to follow. Remember that the steps you describe should cover a bigger goal and still be flexible. So write down what you need to learn, which habits to develop, and what you may lose in the process.

It's always a marvelous idea to find mentors when considering the next steps in your life. Mentors act as role models and are people you admire from afar. They often have deep knowledge that can help you chart a better path for yourself. Such people usually consult other achievers - try to book one, and your investment will definitely pay off.

Personal action vision: short-term objectives

When building your personal strategy, the next step is to define your vision for the next few years. Here you should be more concrete and precise - write the steps in achieving your long-term objectives. So if you wanted to learn a new language, your following steps could be entering the language school or visiting personal lessons.

People working efficiently after building their personal strategic plans

A crucial thing in building the short-term action vision is to verify your performance constantly. Ask yourself: "Do my actions actually help me move towards my goal?". If not, then you may change the approach or revise your long-term goal and check if it fits your ultimate purpose.

In this step, you should define how to perform your daily tasks to accomplish your goal. For example, you need to be persistent, hungry for knowledge and stick to the time frames if you want to change your profession. In turn, honing your soft skills and spending more time with your colleagues could be helpful if you want a promotion to a manager or HR position.

SWOT-analysis: learning your strong and weak sides

If you have already decided which objectives you have on your plate, it's time to find out - are you capable enough to pursue them? Conveying SWOT analysis may help you since this method defines your strengths and opportunities while keeping in mind your weak sides and threats. It gives you a balanced and honest vision of your personality, so you can evaluate whether you're ready for a new challenge or need more time for self-improvement.

First, write down your strengths: they could include excellent soft skills, creativity, problem-solving skills, and everything else you've mastered. These are the allies you can rely on at hard times or use to climb higher. The next step will be defining your weaknesses: here goes fear of public speaking, laziness, communication difficulties, and whatever holds you back. Considering these weaknesses will help you decide whether you can manage your ambitious plan.

People working productively at an open-space

Then think about your opportunities: do you know a few languages? Or maybe you have good connections which could help you get a job in the company of your dream? Keeping these opportunities in mind may be helpful when you think about your next steps. At the same time, don't forget about your threats. For example, when you want to go head over heels into a new project, having a baby could be a threat to your career. Or if you've planned to move to another country, which may negatively affect your career progression. Considering these risks will help you evaluate whether your objectives are worth the effort.

Strategic areas of focus

The final stage of building a personal strategic plan is defining your everyday focus areas. Actually, your daily assignments matter for your ultimate purpose. The way you spend your day could show you what you'll gain later. So choosing a few significant focus areas will help you spend your time and efforts more efficiently. To keep pursuing your ultimate goal, you may highlight the main areas of your life: family, career, self-development, health, and so on.

Then it would be helpful if you found out which activities and accountabilities each area brings to your life. Are these areas balanced or not? If you notice that a career takes too much of your time, try to spread more of your time on self-care and family - burnout won't lead you to success. Choose three main areas you'd like to focus on during the next few years. If they align with your ultimate purpose, then you're on the right path!

Tips on how to make your personal strategic plan work

All plans and strategies look brilliant on paper or in your mind, and you may think there's nothing more straightforward - just make a plan and stick to it. Though, the reality is a bit different. You should build a certain mindset if you don't want to forget about your personal strategic plan after a few weeks. We have gathered practical tips which could help you make your plan work.

Write your strategic plan on paper and keep it on your devices

Writing your goals is the main step to accomplishing them. A study has found that people who describe their plans vividly are 1,4 times more likely to fulfill them. And keeping your written plan at hand will assist your encoding - biological process of analyzing and remembering tasks. Duplicate your plan in the app you're using as a reminder and where you usually keep notes. That way, you can continuously align with your strategic plan and adjust it if needed.

Pursue your risks

The safest plan isn't necessarily the best for your growth and career. You can't calculate all risks and make sure everything will go as planned. Then why don't you try pursuing them and grow your courage? You're always more capable than you imagine, and a personal strategic plan will show you that! Identify your vulnerabilities and start working on them by taking on new challenges. At some point, you will notice that your fears melt away as you become stronger and more capable.

Get an accountability partner to stick to the plan

Sticking to the plan is the most complex challenge you'll face on a self-development path. Research shows that 80% of people who make goals at the end of the year drop them after two weeks, and it works for all kinds of plans and strategies. You need solid willpower or external support to keep pursuing your goals. Getting an accountability partner may help you! It's a person who supports, coaches, and provides feedback on your performance. This person could be your colleague, friend, or partner with an unbiased view and a good knowledge of your personality.

Include only goals and tasks that are under your control

Unrealistic goals can be the worst evil of your strategy. If your plan is full of tasks that depend on other people's will, you may find yourself running in circles with no result. You will be stuck with them, which may eventually make you drop the strategy. So make sure that you can accomplish every goal and task in your plan yourself or with little help.

Evaluate your progress

An essential part of a successful strategic plan is stable performance and progress review. So every few months, take some time to look at your progress, review the accomplished tasks, and see what you could do better. Don't forget to reward yourself for minor successes - you may take a retreat day or watch your favorite movie in the cinema (whatever makes you feel better). That way, staying on track will be easier and more pleasant for you.
