3rd Grade Clock Worksheets

3rd grade clock worksheets teach students one of the most important skills, which is recognizing the different kinds of clocks available today, i.e. analog and digital. It teaches students reading the time for each clock. These worksheets help in improving life skills in recognizing the time and math skills in calculating the exact time.

Benefits of Grade 3 Clock Worksheets

Clock worksheets for grade 3 encourage students to get familiar with writing and reading time with the help of various clocks displayed in front of them. Students are shown a time on an analog clock and asked to write the time in digital form. Hence, these 3rd grade math worksheets provide a visual representation of the clocks that help students understand the concept better. Clock grade 3 worksheets also provide practice questions on calculating time manually, i.e., either add or subtract from the given time, convert minutes to seconds, and write the exact time looking at the hour, minute, and second hands.

What Is Time?

Time is how we measure the moments that pass. It helps us understand when things happen and track events, like when we wake up, go to school, or play with friends, etc.

Time is the measure of moments as they flow from the past through the present into the future. It helps us understand when things happen and how long they last. Just like a ruler measures length, time measures the passage of events in our lives.

We use units like seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and years to arrange or organize time. We also use clocks and calendars to keep track of time.

Teaching time-telling to 3rd graders can be exciting! Start by explaining the basics of the clock: the hour and minute hands, and the numbers on the clock face. Emphasize the 5-minute intervals and skip-counting by 5s around the clock. Gradually introduce them to telling time to the nearest minute as they become more comfortable. With patience and interactive methods, 3rd graders can become time-telling experts!

Importance of Learning Time Concepts in the Grade 3 Curriculum

Here’s an overview of time concepts taught in grade 3:

  • Tell and write time to the nearest minute.
  • Measure time intervals in minutes.
  • Solve word problems involving adding and subtracting time intervals in minutes.
  • Represent time problems on a number line diagram for better visualization.

Learning time concepts in the Grade 3 curriculum is crucial as it helps students with essential life skills. Understanding time helps them manage daily routines, punctuality, and scheduling. It lays the foundation for solving time-related problems and boosts cognitive skills like problem-solving and logical thinking. These skills empower them to handle real-world situations effectively.

What Is Analog Clock and Digital Clock?

Analog clocks and digital clocks are types of clocks that help us tell time in different ways!

Analog Clock: An analog clock is a round clock with three "hands" that move around its face. The hour hand is usually the shortest that points to the hours; the minute hand is generally medium-sized; and the thinnest hand is the second hand, ticking quickly one second at a time.

Remember, the hour hand moves slowly, the minute hand moves a bit faster, and the second hand moves really quickly. Practice and strengthen this concept with Analog Clock Games for Kids !

Digital Clock: A digital clock shows the time using numbers on a screen. It's easier to read because it directly displays the hours, minutes, and seconds.

What Is the Concept of A.M. and P.M.?

When we tell time, we use a special system called "A.M." and "P.M." to say if it's morning or afternoon/evening. In simple words, we can figure out if it's daytime or bedtime using "A.M." and "P.M."

  • "A.M." means "ante meridiem," which is Latin for "before noon." It's used to talk about the time from midnight until just before noon. For example, when you wake up and it's 7:00 a.m., it refers to the morning time.
  • "P.M." stands for "post meridiem," which is Latin for "after noon." It's used to talk about the time from noon until just before midnight. So, if you have dinner at 7:00 P.M., it refers to the evening time.

If you are looking for math time games for grade 3 covering the A.M.-P.M. concept, explore the best A.M. and P.M. Games for 3rd Graders and strengthen the concept with relatable interactive activities!

How To Tell Time

An analog clock has 12 divisions that show the hours. Each division is split into 5 smaller parts. This helps us read the time even more precisely. On the clock, each division represents 5 minutes when you're looking at minutes. When you're reading the hour, each part stands for one hour.

12 divisions of an analog clock

The hour hand on a clock moves slowly. It takes 12 hours to go all the way around the clock. The minute hand moves faster than the hour hand. It takes 60 minutes to make a full circle on the clock's face.

Here's a step-wise guide for kids for telling time on analog clocks:

  • Hour Hand : Look at the short hand. It shows the hour.

If the short hand points at a number, that's the hour. For example, if the hour hand is on 3, it's exactly 3 o'clock. When it's in between two numbers, use the first number as the hour. If it's between 4 and 5, it's 4 o'clock.

  • Minute Hand : Find the longer hand. It points to the minutes.

To read minutes, start from the 12 at the top. Each small tick on the clock's edge represents a minute. So, if the minute hand is on the 3, it means it's 15 minutes past the hour.

What Is Telling Time to the Nearest 5 Minutes?

Telling time to the nearest 5 minutes means figuring out where the minute hand is compared to the numbers on the clock and noticing the 5-minute intervals.

Example : If the hour hand is a bit past 3, it reads 3 hours. If the minute hand points at 2, meaning it reads \(2 \times 5 = 10\) minutes. Thus, the clock reads 03:10.

Kids can count by fives to know that a full circle of the clock is 12 times 5, which is 60 minutes. Help children to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes with our interactive Time to the Nearest 5 Minutes Games for 3rd Graders !

What Is Telling Time to the Nearest Minute?

Telling time to the nearest minute means looking at the exact minute shown. An analog clock has 12 divisions, and each of these divisions is split into five equal parts. Each part stands for 1 minute.

Example : If the clock reads 3:28, it means the minute hand is on the 3 rd division after 5.

It represents \(5 \times 5 = 25\) minutes plus 3 minutes = 28 minutes.

Play and learn with our Time to the Nearest Minute Games for 3rd Graders ! Enjoy fun exercises and tell time like a pro!

How to Tell Time with Quarter to, Quarter Past, Half Past

  • Quarter to: "Quarter to" means the time is close to the next hour, but 15 minutes before it. For example, if it's 5:45, it's "quarter to 6."
  • Quarter Past : "Quarter past" means the time is 15 minutes past the hour. For example, if it's 2:15, it's "quarter past 2."
  • Half Past : "Half past" means the time is 30 minutes past the hour. For example, if it's 8:30, it's "half past 8."

What Is Elapsed Time?

Elapsed time is the duration that passes between two different points in time. It's the difference between a starting time and an ending time. To find elapsed time, subtract the earlier time from the later time, considering hours and minutes. It helps us understand how much time has gone by.

Example : If an activity started at 2:15 P.M. and ended at 4:30 P.M., the elapsed time is

04:30 - 02:15 = 2 hours and 15 minutes.
