IGNOU Assignment Status, Marks & Result June & Dec 2023

IGNOU Assignment Status, Marks, and Result 2023 – Here, Students will get to know about the IGNOU Assignment Status for the most recent TEE sessions June 2023 and December 2022. After taking admission to IGNOU University every student needs to get their Assignments from the nearest study centre or can download the same online from the IGNOU website. As per IGNOU Rules, all students have to compulsory write their assignment which is given by the university and they have to solve it and submit it to the concerned study centre which is allotted to them. The Assignment must be submitted before the last or due date. If the last date of submission is passed then your assignment will be not accepted by the centre under any circumstances.

We want to inform all students that if you fail to submit your required assignment within a given time duration then you will be not permitted to attend the upcoming Term End Examination conducted by IGNOU. The assignments have a 30% weighted in your grade card while the Theory and Practical examination has a 70% weighted.

IGNOU Assignment Status 2023

Latest Update – As we all know that the university has started to update IGNOU TEE Result for June 2023 session. Therfore, we hope that the IGNOU RCs across the country has also begin to update the IGNOU Assignment Status and Marks Online for the most recent TEE session June 2023. Therefore, candidates are advised to do check their IGNOU Assignment status regularly to get their assignment marks and results online as soon as possible.

IGNOU assignment status or marks for TEE June 2023 will get uploaded with the TEE Result June 2023 so keep checking the assignment status regularly to get your marks. If you already submitted the IGNOU Assignment for the session December 2022 to your study centre or through online or offline mode then you don’t have to wait for more time. The link to check your assignment status and marks is now updated to confirm whether it gets updated online or not. The assignment status and marks for December & June 2023 are generally updated with the TEE Result December & June 2023 respectively.

IGNOU Assignment Status Update Process & Time

After submission of assignments through any of the available methods, the assignments go for an evaluation to the evaluator of the study centre or regional centre. Once Evaluator has successfully evaluated your assignment then they will either upload your marks directly on the IGNOU Site or it will be sent to IGNOU Delhi for updating online and thereafter it can be seen by each student to get their report. You can get your Marks, Status, Grades, and Results of your Assignments from here. Generally, IGNOU Assignment marks updating and uploading within 40 days after submission to the concerned study or regional centre.

Things to Do after Submission of IGNOU Assignment

If you have submitted your Assignments to IGNOU Study Centre then now is time for checking your marks and status online. After the submission of assignments, it goes to the evaluation department in which IGNOU evaluators are starting the evaluation of each assignment solution. If only a few days are passed then we advise all students that please check their Assignment’s Marks and Status after three or four weeks.

The students of TEE June 2023, December 2022, June 2022, and December 2021 may check the status of their IGNOU Assignments from here. The submission of IGNOU Assignment for session June 2023 was already over so candidates can now regularly check the status to get to know whether their marks are updated in the grade card or not. We also want to inform our students that the assignment marks for June 2023 session also get updated with TEE Result June 2023 so students are advised to check their assignment marks by following the given procedure.

How to Check IGNOU Assignment Status, Marks & Result 2023?

Many of the students are getting confused about checking their assignment status & marks online after submission of their assignments to the study centre which they prepare with their hard work. After coming to the section, you need to enter your 9 or 10 digit enrolment number and select your program code from the list and click on submit to get your assignment status on your screen.

Note – IGNOU Assignment status may take some time to get updated online so candidates are requested to keep check their status regularly to find their assignment marks from here. In some cases, the study centre first evaluates the assignment, after evaluation, they send the marks to the regional centre and then the concerned authority at RC uploads the marks online which definitely takes some time.

What If IGNOU Assignment Status is Not Updated?

Sometimes the update process of IGNOU Assignment status gets delayed for an unknown reason like the evaluation of assignments are delayed in the concerned study centre or maybe the regional centre has not uploaded your assignment marks online. Candidates can wait till the declaration of the result to get updates on their assignment but if you are not able to find your assignment status or marks even after the release of the TEE Result then you need to connect with centre where you submitted your assignments.

In most cases, candidates have to visit their IGNOU Study Centre and complain to the coordinator of centre to get updates regarding their pending assignment marks and status. Please keep a copy of the grade card and don’t forget the receipt of the assignment which you received while submitting of assignments. Hello sir/mam, i have already submitted my assignment of MCOM first year on june 2021 session and my 2nd year of MCOM is completed. when i checked my grade card it shows that i have not completed my 2 subjects in MCOM first year because my marks in assignment is below 40. so i again submitted on through IGNOU link. IGNOU Assignment Status 2023 - The Indira Gandhi National Open University has extended the last date to submit IGNOU assignment for ODL and online programmes for December TEE 2023 to November 30, 2023. The IGNOU published the IGNOU assignment list for the IGNOU December TEE 2023. The IGNOU closed the IGNOU June 2023 TEE assignment submission on May 15, 2023. The IGNOU June 2023 assignment deadline for ODL and online programmes offered by GOAL and EVBB was April 30 . The PMMO Breakpoint upload via MS Excel file feature will allow the ability to mass upload breakpoints instead of manually updating one at a time. The report will read an MS Excel file to load all the breakpoints into the PMMO Breakpoint table automatically.

Adding Change Reason for Manual Pegging Changes, and Restoring Pegging Assignments

In Project Manufacturing Management and Optimization (PMMO) in SAP S/4HANA, pegging refers to the process of establishing a link or association between the demand for a product or component and its corresponding supply sources or production activities. It helps in tracking the relationship between different elements within a project, such as finished goods, semi-finished goods, raw materials, and operations.

With this new 2023 release, we made enhancements to project manufacturing management and optimization (PMMO):

Maintaining pegging assignments manually for PMMO:

Configurable option that allows users to enter a change reason text for audit purposes,
Breakpoints enhanced with separate fields for WBS, cost center, and network activity,
“List screen” addition to enable single-screen maintenance for multiple entries.
Integration of pegging header display with the ability to restore pegging assignments from a list of historical pegging assignment runs.

Force Generation

In the context of Defense & Security in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition, force generation refers to the process of assembling and organizing military personnel, equipment, and resources to form operational forces. It involves the planning, allocation, and management of resources to meet the specific operational requirements of defense and security organizations.

Qualifications in Positions Functionality and Assignment in Force Elements Functionality for Defense and Security

Force element, operation & exercise assignment transfer.

This feature can be used to also generate assignments for all child objects for the selected force element, including force elements, positions, persons, and FMPOs.

This facilitates a new business scenario that is required by customers.

Feature flexibility allows you to define which type of objects (authorized and actual personnel, authorized material) should be included and to use the structure view to exclude some child force elements that are not involved in the process.

Qualification Overview in Position app

This feature improves customer efficiency by providing an overview of the qualifications, including the qualification level. All qualifications that describe the position, including the ones inherited from the job and qualification block, or those that are directly assigned to the position, are listed here.

Hyperlinks for User Efficiency in the Display Status Board app

Status board alert management.

This feature enables additional capacities to receive real-time alerts about changes to dependent transactional data for the technical objects currently being displayed in the status board application:

Alert for equipment master data change, critical and “regular” equipment,
Alert by the functional location hierarchy,
Alert triggering Customizing.

This feature also allows immediate and accurate user decisions to be taken by automatically and continuously displaying current data.

Additional Details

In addition to the main equipment, real-time alerts about changes to dependent transactional data for the technical objects are now also available from the list view in the “ Display Status Board ” app for critical equipment, regular equipment, and the functional location.

The button Confirm All Alerts is available for all types of equipment from the list view and the detailed view in the “ Display Status Board” app, which enables all alerts for an object to be confirmed.

The alert indicator on the facet header gives you the information that alerts exist on facets on which you are not currently focusing, and on which you could focus at a later stage.

You can now use the Customizing settings for alert triggering to define which changes trigger alerts from various backend transactions.

This feature enables you to do the following for a selected master equipment, critical equipment, or a “regular equipment”:

Display or update the equipment master data,
Display or update the functional location,
Display, update or create a new maintenance request, notification, work, or flight order for selected equipment.

From the list view in the “ Display Status Board ” app, this completely new feature enables you to do the following with a minimum number of clicks for selected master equipment, critical equipment, or “regular equipment”:

Create, update, or display equipment master data,
Display equipment change documents,
Create, update, or display the functional location,
Transfer data from the equipment or functional location,
Search for technical objects,
Create a new maintenance request, notification, work, or flight order for the selected equipment,
Navigate to the Utilizer or Owner force element.

From the detailed view in the “ Display Status Board ” app, new hyperlinks complete the previous “display only” hyperlinks, which can be used to update and create maintenance requests, notifications, and work, or flight orders.

Authorized Versus Actual Comparison for a Person or Personal and Functional Equipment (PFEM)

This feature has been transformed from an existing API to become a standalone app “ Compare Authorized with Actual Materials for Person ”. The user now has a holistic view of the materials held by a person and what was planned for them. Even materials that were not originally authorized can be pulled into the overview.

The key features of this new 2023 release are:

Solution that illustrates what a person has versus what is planned for them,
Ability to balance out missing or even additional materials more easily, depending on the location,
Mapping of the authorized materials of a force element and its position to all issuing for a person assigned to that position, through the authorized-versus-actual comparison for persons or PFEMs,
Use of the authorized materials assigned to a position as the baseline for comparison,
Ability to include a person’s issuing information in the overview, in all variations both for functional equipment or personal equipment.

Enriched Integration of Defense and Security Functionality with other Components and Systems

Integration of sap extended warehouse management with mrp area management.

This new 2023 release enables you to create an extended warehouse (EWM) in the MRP area. Creation is based on a predefined EWM warehouse that is used as a copy. In a second step, the warehouse (WM) and EWM are linked and finally, the WM warehouse is set to be maintained as an EWM warehouse. This new feature not only creates a new EWM warehouse but also ensures that there is a connection between the WM and the EWM.

Enhanced APIs for SAP S/4HANA Defense & Security

This feature contains APIs for mass creation of force elements, capabilities, capability statements, and flexible material planning objects.

D&S specific extractors

This feature that is provided for CDS view extractors enables a new analytical data extraction to be transferred to SAP BW/4HANA solutions.

CDS view extractors are created or enhanced for force elements, logistics, maintenance, and SAP S/4HANA Foundation. The technology used for the force element hierarchy is S-API. The core SAP S/4HANA CDS can also be used to complement the extraction of the SAP S/4HANA Defense & Security data.
Using the new CDS extractors is the preferred option here.

Effects on Data Transfer

The CDS extractors are based on the new data model, meaning that mapping to all the classical fields in consumer data models might be remodeled.
The CDS extractors require mapping transformations to the info objects and other analytical content so that they are suitable for the analytical data model.
Classical evaluation paths are supported for hierarchy extraction if no data model changes are involved.

Disconnected Operations

Disconnected operations enable defense and security personnel to continue their tasks and access essential information even in environments with limited or unstable network connectivity. This enhances operational flexibility and resilience, allowing operations to proceed smoothly in various scenarios, including remote or challenging locations. This ensures also that critical missions can continue without interruptions, even if there is a loss of network connectivity. It allows personnel to perform their duties, record data, and access necessary resources, such as maps, intelligence data, and operational plans, regardless of the availability of real-time network connection.

Framework Enhancements and Runtime Optimizations for Data Distribution in Disconnected Operations

Improve conditional processing of distribution queues.

This feature provides the capability to consistently process distribution queues by relating the queues to each other using different parameters that enable multiple checks and actions to be performed.

With this new 2023 release, the following features are available with conditional processing:

Connectivity check : Before a queue is sent, the connectivity to the target system is checked and the queue is handled according to the result.
Ensuring completion of initial data distribution before delta distribution : Delta distribution of data synchronization cannot start until the initial data distribution using the subscription has been completed successfully including the data checkout.
Sequencing of delta distribution queues : During the delta distribution, conditional processing ensures that queues for the same object type and key are processed in the correct order to avoid creating inconsistent data.
Sequencing of initial data distribution queues : During the initial data distribution using the subscription, conditional processing ensures that queues are processed in the correct order observing any object dependencies between the queues.
Queue reprocessing : Queues with an error status stop the data synchronization. Reprocessing provides the option to resend the data after the cause of the error has been resolved in the sending system.

Provide insights into memory required for queue distribution of mobile data objects

This feature provides the capability to analyze the memory required for the synchronization of any Mobile Data Object between the central S/4HANA system and the remote servers & vice versa, thereby enabling bandwidth and memory sizing in communication-challenged environments.

The information about the queue size can be used to estimate the queue size parameter which is an already known feature in the Remote Server solution and which is essential to create a sizing for the bandwidth and memory consumption during data transfer.

Filter out completed data from the initial data distribution

To be able to reduce the data to be distributed from the central system to a remote server within the initial data distribution via subscriptions it is possible to filter out transactional data that has already been completed or closed and is therefore not relevant anymore for business processes on a remote server.

For maintenance-related data, the filter-out option is available for notifications and orders. Via parameters in MAIF, the timeframe can be specified for when in the past the documents must be completed or closed so that they would not be considered anymore for distribution.

For supply-related data filtering out happens automatically if the complete supply process via Stock Transfer Requisition (STR), Stock Transport Order (STO), Outbound and Inbound Delivery, Goods Issue, and Receipt has been completed prior to the data derivation within the subscription.

Extended Maintenance and Supply Chain Processes on the Remote Server

Enable customer-defined distribution of change protection for maintenance plans.

This feature provides the capability for customers to use a BAdI implementation to define whether the change protection for a maintenance plan follows the SAP-defined default distribution logic, or whether a customer-defined logic for the change protection distribution applies.

Enable cross-system accounting data integration for maintenance and supply processes

This feature provides the capability to distribute selected accounting data between the central S/4HANA system and a remote server, which enables additional functions in the areas of maintenance and supply, and in doing so enables users to perform additional business processes while operating at a remote site working offline in a communication-challenged environment.

Distribute data of individual database tables, both standard and customer-specific

There are multiple reasons why specific data must be made available on a remote server by other means than for example via transports or subscription logic. Examples:

Specific configuration (Customizing) data which in a Defense & Security environment is not transported along the system landscape, but is directly created in the productive central system,
Generic application data for which no derivation logic – related to the subscription approach – can be applied,
Application data for specific business objects, for which the complete set of data shall be made available on a remote server, instead of derivation and distribution of only specific data instances,
Data for which no “event triggering” mechanism is available to detect the creation of new or the change of existing data on the central system, with relevance to distribution to the remote server,
Customer-owned database tables.

For such cases, a report is provided to define and distribute the data. The report can either be scheduled as a regular background job to distribute new/changed data sets or executed manually in case of specific one-time data distribution requirements.

Report : DFS_DIS_DISTRIBUTE

This new 2023 release provides the capability to distribute individual database tables that contain data that is not necessarily automatically derived using the subscription during the initial data distribution. These can be specific Customizing, non-Customizing, or customer-owned tables.

The report also provides the option of distributing data for specific pre-defined business objects for which no other automatic data distribution method exists.

Distribute handling unit and packing instruction data used within cross-system supply processes

This new 2023 release provides the capability to distribute handling unit and packing instruction data between the central SAP S/4HANA system and a remote server, thereby enabling users to perform additional business processes while operating at a remote site working offline in a communication-challenged environment.

The following data is in scope for distribution:

Handling units related to the FMPO business object,
Handling units created during packing in the outbound delivery,
Packing instructions related to the FMPO business object.

By distributing the data between the central system and the remote server it is possible to do the following:

Display the distributed data in the target system,

Continue the cross-system supply process with handling units.

Distribute configuration control data enhancing cross-system maintenance processes

With the delivery of this new 2023 release, the following data related to setup, processes, and checks in the area of Configuration Control can be distributed from the Central System to the Remote Server.

Material Master: Data relevant to Configuration Control,
Configuration Profile,
Equipment: Data relevant to Configuration Control,
Master Parts List including Object Dependency and iPPE-Set,
Change Master with relevance to Master Parts List,
Structure Gap for Functional Location / Equipment Structure.

For the Structure Gap also the re-distribution from the Remote Server to the Central System has been enabled.

You have now the capability to distribute data between the central SAP S/4HANA system and a remote server, which is required for configuration control functions, and in doing so enable an enhanced scope of business processes that users can perform at a remote site working offline in a communication-challenged environment.

Distribute and monitor change protection for linked maintenance notifications and orders

This feature enables you to decide when saving a maintenance notification or order whether the change protection is to be distributed according to the work center involved.

In the case of a “network” of linked notifications and work orders, the system ensures an “all or nothing” approach to change protection distribution for the notifications and the order for the network. This enables the linked notifications and the order to be edited in the system in which all of them have change protection.

SAP Fiori app and Tools for Administration and Monitoring of Data Distribution between Central System and Remote Servers

Manually trigger the distribution of change protection for a subscription or a specific object.

In exceptional cases, it may be required by a system landscape administrator to distribute change protection for specific business objects outside and beyond the SAP standard logic for the distribution of change protection.

This report provides the capability to manually distribute the change protection for a specific object or for all relevant objects in a subscription either from the remote server to the central system or vice versa.

The following options exist when using the report for exceptional distribution of change protection:

Recall or resend:

Recall refers to the distribution of the change protection from the remote server to the central system.
Resend refers to the distribution of the change protection from the central system to the remote server.

Distribution of change protection for a subscription or a specific object:

Subscription: The change protection is distributed for all relevant objects having been distributed as part of the subscription ID entered.
Specific object: The change protection is only distributed for the specific object ID entered. It is only possible to enter objects for which a change protection mechanism is in place.

Transaction : DFS_DIS_CP.

Rollback of subscriptions

To stop data distribution between the central system and the remote server for a defined scope of data, a report has been provided supporting multiple activities related to the rollback of subscriptions, which includes re-distributing ownership and change protection from the remote server to the central system, stopping further data distribution between the systems and deleting the subscription in the central system.

The following options exist when using the subscription rollback report:

Subscription rollback mode:

Subscription : The rollback steps are performed for a single inactive subscription, while connected to the remote server.
System : The rollback steps are performed for all subscriptions related to the specified remote server, while connected to the remote server.
Emergency : The rollback steps are performed for all subscriptions related to the specified remote server, even if there is no connectivity from the central system to the remote server.

Business example: The remote server has been lost or destroyed. Therefore, the data ownership must be made available in the central system and any kind of data distribution must be stopped.

Rollback steps:

Recall ownership : Transfer ownership and change protection for relevant data from the remote server back to the central system. Stop data distribution from the central system to the remote server.
Delete subscription and MAIF : Delete the relevant subscription-related MAIF table entries and the relevant subscriptions from the central system.

Transaction : DFS_SUBS_ROLLBACK

Provide Insights into the Status of Data Distribution between the Central System and Remote Servers

For initial data distribution as well as for the data exchange during the regular operation of the systems this new SAP Fiori application provides the capability to start with a high-level overview of the data distribution status between the central system and the remote servers and to drill down into the analysis of errors for each remote server where required.

Navigation to supporting tools is also provided to further support the administrator while performing the analysis.

The Basketball Hall of Famer is worth $1.2 billion thanks to investments in several professional sports teams and a life insurance company that has reached new heights under his ownership.

If Earvin Johnson wanted to realize his bold business ambitions, he was going to need a little magic. During the peak years of the Showtime-era Lakers in the 1980s, there was little reason to believe that an athlete would ever be taken seriously in the boardroom. So when a then-31-year-old Johnson told Sports Illustrated in 1990 that he wanted “to be in that $100-$200 million range” someday, the magazine wondered what he would even do with that kind of wealth. “For a franchise,” he answered. “And it doesn't have to be the Lakers; it doesn't even have to be an NBA team. I’m a sports fan. If baseball became available before basketball, I’d be right there. I want to do big business.”

Today, Johnson owns small stakes in the NFL’s Washington Commanders, MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and MLS’s LAFC. His Magic Johnson Enterprises has been a major player in everything including movie theaters, fast food franchises, real estate, healthcare and, most significantly for Johnson, the Des Moines, Iowa-based life insurance provider EquiTrust, of which his controlling stake makes up the majority of a personal net worth that Forbes now estimates to be $1.2 billion.

That makes the 64-year-old Johnson just the fourth athlete Forbes has ever identified as a billionaire, alongside Michael Jordan , Tiger Woods and LeBron James . And unlike the others, Johnson didn’t have the benefit of massive income from his playing days. His career earnings with the Lakers from 1979 to 1991, plus a brief comeback in 1996, add up to around $40 million (about $110 million when adjusted for inflation), pocket change when compared with James’ $479 million and counting. And even during his prime playing years, Johnson pulled in only between $2 million and $4 million per year in endorsements, according to Forbes estimates at the time. James, by comparison, will make an estimated $70 million off the court this season alone.

With so much farther to climb, Johnson needed to succeed in business the same way he did on the court—by being a great teammate. He built his portfolio through joint ventures and partnerships on the strength of his winning smile as much as his savvy, making lasting relationships with those at the upper echelons of the business world.

“He was always agnostic about what the business was,” says Michael Ovitz, “as long as it fit the parameters of what a good business should be.”

“He was born with that special talent; he’s had it since the beginning of his career,” says Mandalay Entertainment CEO Peter Guber, who has invested with Johnson on multiple ventures, including the Los Angeles Dodgers. “If I could know exactly what it was, I would bottle it and give it to myself and everybody in my company.”

Johnson first met Guber decades ago during a game at The Forum, when the most powerful people in Los Angeles were courtside regulars. Before an inbounds pass, Johnson approached Guber, then CEO of Sony Pictures, and music executive Joe Smith to ask how he could get into business. The two became mentors and in 1987 introduced Johnson to CAA cofounder and Hollywood super-agent Michael Ovitz. After initially telling Johnson he had no interest in athletes because of their limited earning potential, Ovitz agreed to put him through a business boot camp that included getting him subscriptions to business publications and having him participate in simulated business meetings. Johnson won him over so much that Ovitz even renegotiated his Lakers contract and set him up with potential business partners, all without taking a penny in commission.

“It’s probably the first and only time I ever did that,” Ovitz tells Forbes . “I just made a decision, I can’t really tell you why, that I was just going to help him out and make it work for him. But I did it, and he was just terrific. I was very happy that I did what I did.”

That Magic trick worked several times over the years. In 1990, Ovitz watched Johnson charm executives from PepsiCo over lunch at the 21 Club in midtown Manhattan, eventually landing a 33% stake in a $60 million deal to take over a bottling plant near Washington, D.C., reportedly for a cash outlay of less than half of its value. “He was unbelievable,” Ovitz recalls.

A few years later, Johnson pitched Guber on building a movie theater in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, which was plagued by gang violence at the time. Nevertheless, Guber’s Loews movie theater chain agreed to a 50/50 partnership. Johnson met with representatives of the Crips and Bloods and convinced them to declare the theater neutral territory. “I said, ‘I am not here to disrespect either one of you,’” Johnson recounted in the 2022 Apple TV+ docuseries They Call Me Magic . “What I am here for is to say, this theater is going to help the entire Black community. I want you to come. I want your families to come. But you guys gotta agree that we can’t have violence, outside or inside that theater. And I am creating jobs. So if you guys got some guys who want to work, I will employ them.”

Six years later, the theater produced $5 million in ticket sales and was among the top-grossing movie venues in the country. Johnson eventually added theaters in predominantly Black neighborhoods in Houston, Atlanta, New York City and Washington, D.C.. In 2004, he sold the theaters back to Loews.

D uring that same period, Johnson invited then-Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz to his Baldwin Hills theater for a screening of Whitney Houston’s Waiting to Exhale , and sold him on the potential of Black America’s considerable spending power. Three years later, in 1998, Starbucks established a 50/50 joint venture with Johnson to open more than 100 coffee shops in Black neighborhoods across the country. To fund the rapid expansion, Starbucks even allowed Johnson to use the company as his personal bank, taking out a loan for his half of the capital. He eventually repaid the loan in full, and in 2010 sold the locations back to the company for a reported $75 million profit.

“We got a tremendous amount of leverage in those partnerships,” says Ken Lombard, president of Johnson Development Corporation from its founding in 1992 until 2004. “Because we could get into a room and Earvin comes in and all of a sudden everyone is trying to figure out ways to make it happen versus reasons why they shouldn’t.”

Showtime, The Sequel: In the 1990s, Johnson opened a chain of movie theaters in predominantly Black neighborhoods because he knew how to reach the audience.

In addition to leveraging his celebrity, Johnson brought to each of his deals what he felt was his expertise—reaching Black consumers. He stocked his movie theaters with flavored sodas and extra hot dogs, for example. “I told Loews, Black people are going to eat dinner at the movies,” he told the New York Times about the strategy in 2000. “Those hot dogs are our dinner. Same with the drinks. Our soda sales were just okay. I said, Black people love flavored drinks because we were raised on Kool-Aid. So we put in punch and strawberry soda and orange, and the numbers went through the roof.”

Similarly, he swapped out scones for sweet potato pie in his Starbucks shops, where he also installed picnic tables with chess boards and played R&B over the speakers. Despite their locations in lower-income neighborhoods, the average spend per customer at his Starbucks locations was higher than the national average.

Lombard says the Starbucks deal was a game-changer for Johnson, earning the respect of institutional investors who had initially turned him down. The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) invested $50 million in a real estate development venture he cofounded with San Francisco-based investment management firm MacFarlane Partners in 1996, targeting Black communities. Johnson and MacFarlane put up just $1.5 million, collecting money through asset management fees and incentives upon exiting. Later, Johnson scaled the same concept in partnership with Canyon Capital , a Los Angeles-based hedge fund, raising a $300 million fund in 2001, a $600 million real estate fund in 2005 and a $1 billion fund in 2008.

“Sometimes people try to criticize people who do joint ventures, especially an African American entrepreneur,” says Earl Graves Jr., another professional athlete-turned-businessman who fronted Johnson’s first deal with PepsiCo alongside his father, the founder of Black Enterprise magazine. “When you go to deposit money at a bank, they don’t ask you whether you were creator of the business or just in a joint venture.”

For all of his business savvy, Johnson missed out on some of the biggest paydays. As the now-infamous story goes, Nike offered him an endorsement deal before the 1979 NBA draft that included royalties on shoe sales as well as a substantial amount of company stock, even greater than the deal Michael Jordan would accept five years later. Johnson turned it down in favor of guaranteed money from Converse, costing him a massive financial windfall.

In 1994, Lakers owner Jerry Buss gave Johnson a chance to purchase a 4.5% stake in the team for $10 million, which Johnson eventually sold in 2010 to healthcare billionaire Patrick Soon Shiong just before NBA team values exploded. According to Forbes estimates, in 2010, Johnson’s stake in the Lakers would have been worth $29 million. Had he held on, Johnson’s stake in the team would be worth more than $265 million today.

The same year, Johnson took a meeting in Santa Monica with Guber and Joe Lacob, the new owners of the Golden State Warriors. “He was the first person we met with after we acquired the team about him potentially being involved with us,” Guber says. Citing his deep ties with the Lakers, Johnson ultimately declined to invest. Forbes now values the Warriors at $7.7 billion , more than 17 times what the team was purchased for in 2010.

Still, Johnson has been able to enter, exit and scale up his investments for more than 30 years. The money earned from his Lakers and Starbucks sales in 2010 gave him the ability to write a $50 million check to join the Dodgers ownership group in 2012, alongside Guber and Guggenheim Partners. His 2.3% stake has now more than doubled in value, worth an estimated $110 million. The same year Johnson bought into the Dodgers, he made a small investment in Simply Healthcare, coinciding with its launch of a Medicaid plan for people with HIV and AIDS, and when the company sold for $1 billion in 2015, Johnson used the money to buy a 60% stake in EquiTrust Life Insurance from Guggenheim.

EquiTrust is now the biggest asset in the Magic Johnson Enterprises portfolio, and with Johnson as its majority owner, it represents just how far he has come as a businessman. Since taking over, Johnson has grown the company’s total assets from $16 billion to $26 billion, with annual revenues hovering around $2.6 billion. Andrea Caruso, chief operating officer of the life insurance data provider MIB Solutions, says the pandemic boosted awareness for annuity products but didn’t necessarily guarantee success because “life insurance is sold, not bought.” Far more important, she says, is navigating the complex web of ever-changing regulatory guidelines.

“Life insurance definitely does require an investment. Would I say it’s an easy investment? No,” Caruso says. “But it does provide an opportunity to provide that piece of mind to people.”

While owning a life insurance company may have a deeper meaning to a man who was diagnosed with HIV in 1991, according to Ovitz, “he was always agnostic about what the business was as long as it fit the parameters of what a good business should be.”

Today, Johnson has money in everything from NFTs to CBD, and his infrastructure joint venture is contracted to renovate Terminal 1 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Los Angeles International Airport’s cargo facility.
