This work aims to characterize students' writing processes using keystroke logs and understand how the extracted characteristics influence the text quality at specific moments of writing. Earlier works have proposed predictive models characterizing students' writing processes and mainly rely on distribution-based measures of pauses obtained from the overall keystroke logs. However, the effect of isolated phases of writing has not been evaluated in these models. Moreover, current theories on writing suggest that the quality of writing depends on when specific writing behaviours are performed. This view is not examined in the keystroke logging analysis literature. Addressing the mentioned challenges, the two contributions of this work are: a) characterizing students' writing processes connected to isolated writing phases and examining their influence on writing quality; and b) temporal analysis of keystrokes and investigating whether the significance of writing characteristics varies as students progress in their writing task. Our results suggest that characterizing students' writing based on isolated writing phases is slightly more predictive of writing quality. Additionally, the effect of several writing characteristics on writing quality changes when considering the time dimension.

Touch-typing for better spelling and narrative-writing skills on the computer

Skilled actions are commonly assumed to be controlled by precise internal schemas or cognitive maps. We challenge these ideas in the context of skilled typing, where prominent theories assume that typing is controlled by a well-learned cognitive map that plans finger movements without feedback. In two experiments, we demonstrate that online physical interaction with the keyboard critically mediates typing skill. Typists performed single-word and paragraph typing tasks on a regular keyboard, a laser-projection keyboard, and two deconstructed keyboards, made by removing successive layers of a regular keyboard. Averaged over the laser and de- constructed keyboards, response times for the first keystroke increased by 37%, the interval between keystrokes increased by 120%, and error rate increased by 177%, relative to those of the regular keyboard. A schema view predicts no influence of external motor feedback, because actions could be planned internally with high precision. We argue that the expert knowledge mediating action control emerges during online interaction with the physical environment.

A Multilingual Copy Task: Measuring Typing and Motor Skills in Writing with Inputlog

In the field of writing process research keystroke logging programs have become instrumental in the identification and understanding of the cognitive processes and strategies involved in writing. In this article we describe a logging program called Inputlog (freely available via the internet to the research community). Inputlog consists of four modules: (1) a data collection module that registers digital writing processes on a very detailed level; (2) a data analysis module that offers basic and more advanced statistical analyses (e.g. text and pause analysis); (3) an integration module that allows data merging between data files from other observation tools; and (4) a playback module that replays the recorded writing session. This article opens with an overview of research methods in writing research with a particular focus on keystroke logging. Next we describe the general and technical features of Inputlog. In the second part of the article we elaborate on the research objectives that can be addressed with Inputlog, either in isolation or in combination with various other research techniques. We describe a number of research projects that have been conducted in the workplace and in an educational context. To illustrate the methodological complementarity of Inputlog, the final section discusses four different studies in which keystroke logging was combined with other observation methods (thinking aloud protocols, speech recognition logging, usability logs, and eyetracking data). We conclude the paper with a preview of plans for further developments in the domain.

This article describes the procedures and measures that the authors developed to analyze a sample of 80 keystroke logs, with a view to achieving a better alignment between keystroke-logging measures and underlying cognitive processes. An Analysis of Motion in Typing with the Keybowl

Researchers have proposed many text entry systems to enable users to perform this frequent task as quickly and precise as possible. Unfortunately the reported data varies widely and it is difficult to extract meaningful average entry speeds and error rates from this body of work. In this article we collect data from well-designed and well-reported experiments for the most important text entry methods, including those for handheld devices. Our survey results show that thumb keyboard is the fastest text entry method after the standard QWERTY keyboard, and that Twiddler is fastest amongst non-QWERTY methods. Moreover, we survey how text entry errors were handled in these studies. Finally, we conducted a user study to detect which effect different error-handling methodologies have on text entry performance metrics. Our study results show that the way human errors are handled has indeed a significant effect on all frequently used error metrics.

Background. It is well established that handwriting fluency constrains writing quality by limiting resources for higher order processes such as planning and reviewing. According to the ‘simple view of writing’ then slow keyboarding speed should hinder the quality of keyboarded essay compositions in the same way that slow handwriting hinders handwritten essay compositions. Given a lack of touch-typing instruction in UK schools it was hypothesized that children’s written compositions produced via the keyboard would be worse than produced by hand. Aims. To extend the work of Christensen (2004) and Rogers and Case-Smith (2002) by examining the relationship between handwriting fluency and keyboarding fluency throughout the primary school and studying the link between word-processed compositional quality and keyboarding fluency. Samples and methods. The handwriting fluency and keyboarding fluency of 300 children in primary school were measured. Year 5 and year 6 children completed a measure of compositional quality by hand and by keyboard. Results and comment. There was a high correlation between handwriting and keyboarding speed and handwriting speed was consistently faster than keyboarding speed across all ages. Only a small minority of children in years 5 and 6 had faster keyboarding than handwriting speed. Results showed that children’s compositional quality was superior in the handwritten scripts as opposed to the keyboarded scripts. Keyboarded scripts were up to 2 years behind handwritten scripts in development. Writing by keyboard does not necessarily lead to improvements in script quality, compared with handwritten scripts. Explicit keyboarding instruction (touch-typing) is needed to develop keyboarding fluency and unlock the full potential of the word processor for children’s writing.
