9 things to know before you see ‘The Marvels’

‘the marvels’ might be the mcu’s most ‘homework required’ film yet. here’s what to know and watch..

the homework movie

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest film, “The Marvels,” is about to cram elements of multiple Disney Plus television shows, Marvel movies and an understanding of the wider Marvel multiverse canon into one film — giving moviegoers something of a homework assignment.

“The Marvels,” a sequel to 2019’s billion-dollar earner “Captain Marvel,” brings fans back into the journey of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), who finds herself swapping powers with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). They form a mini-Avengers trio that tackles the villainous Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) and engages with Prince Yan (Park Seo-joon). Oh yeah, and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is along for the ride, too.

Marvel has been weaving its interconnected stories between television and film for several years now. By our calculations, a completionist would need to watch more than five films, four Disney Plus shows, potentially pre-Disney Marvel movies and possibly read an interview or two to understand every corner of this movie, making it one of the most Marvel of Marvel films.

So, instead of watching some two days’ worth of MCU content, here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know.

Captain Marvel has an odd comic-book origin story

Going through the history of the Captain Marvel character is like combing through the history of the Roman Empire: lots of different people taking up the mantle with various origin stories that all tie in to events spanning multiple planets, galaxies and wars.

The first Captain Marvel was a character named Mar-Vell. But over the years, others such as Rambeau (more on her later), Genis-Vell and Phyla-Vell took on the role. Carol Danvers was one of the most recent characters to do so.

Becoming Captain Marvel: The evolution of Carol Danvers from love interest to the most powerful Avenger

The MCU adapted the Danvers origin story for the films. “Captain Marvel” (2019) hinted at the other comic-book storylines when Danvers faced off against Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), originally a rival of Mar-Vell (Annette Bening, playing a new version of that character for the MCU).

Captain Marvel got her powers from an Infinity Stone. (Kind of.)

Danvers was a fighter pilot for the U.S. military before a crash exposed her to energy from the Tesseract, the Marvel MacGuffin housing an Infinity Stone.

Her accident with the stone gave her superpowers that might make her the strongest Avenger out there (though surely Thor and the Hulk would dispute that). Upon receiving her powers, she was captured by the alien Kree military and drained of her memories. She lived under the Kree’s watchful eye and fought against their rival, the Skrull Empire.

After an accidental crash landing on Earth, Danvers discovered that she was actually from Earth and unlocked greater abilities — which she used to support the Skrulls instead.

Captain Marvel is a hero who mostly fights in the cosmos

Once she saved the Skrulls lingering near Earth, Captain Marvel rushed off to other parts of the galaxy to help other planets in need. She briefly returned to Earth in “Endgame” to help kill Thanos after he blipped away half of the universe. She left again, only to return when a Thanos from another timeline showed up to avenge himself. Once that saga was over, she apparently ventured off to help defend the galaxy from various threats.

So no, she doesn’t spend a lot of time on Earth. She may be a member of the Avengers, but they haven’t exactly been active since “Endgame,” either.

“The Marvels” appears to bring her back to Earth to help fight off villains and reunite with her allies Rambeau and Fury.

She has become a leader of the Avengers

After the events of “Infinity War,” in which Thanos wipes away half of the living universe, Captain Marvel starts working more closely with the Avengers. In the movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” we briefly see her help uncover some mysteries on Earth.

Given her stature and abilities, it’s no question she has become one of the new leaders of the Avengers, especially after Captain America (Chris Evans) became older and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) died. With Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) somewhat retired and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) making regular trips to space, Captain Marvel remains one of the few major heroes working with the team.

She has two new allies, introduced on Disney Plus shows

For “The Marvels,” Captain Marvel will team up with Rambeau and Kamala Khan (Vellani).

Rambeau was introduced in the original “Captain Marvel” flick as a child, but she returned in the Disney Plus show “WandaVision” as an intelligence agent looking to uncover the mystery of what was happening in the town of Westview. During her adventure, the adult Rambeau became saturated with unique energy, which rewrote her DNA and gave her superhero abilities.

Meanwhile, Kamala made her debut on the show “Ms. Marvel” as a superfan of the Avengers and Captain Marvel.

This is the first time we will see heroes originating from a Disney Plus show unite with a film-based hero, meaning that Disney Plus shows are somewhat required viewing for this film.

(Fury also appears in the film fresh off the events of his Disney Plus show, “Secret Invasion,” though it’s unclear how much it’ll matter.)

Her biggest fan is Ms. Marvel, a mutant

We learn in “Ms. Marvel” that Kamala gained her abilities after finding a special bangle that unlocked a latent mutation within her.

So why does that matter? Well, this is the first time in the MCU’s history that we had full acknowledgment of mutants, which make up the X-Men team, the popular superhero squad that has been absent from the MCU.

Rights to the X-Men had previously been owned by Twentieth Century Fox, which was fully acquired by Disney in 2019. The rights are now under Marvel’s control, meaning we might see more mutants and X-Men in the future, with Kamala as a potential starting point.

Her new teammate is the superhero Photon. (We just don’t know it yet.)

In “The Marvels,” Captain Marvel will also team up with Rambeau, who has rewritten DNA that gives her the power to manipulate energy.

In the comics, Rambeau actually becomes Captain Marvel before changing her name to Photon and later Spectrum. Under both names, the character became a member of the Avengers.

But in the MCU, Rambeau doesn’t have an alias yet.

Captain Marvel might cross the multiverse

The MCU is caught up in the Multiverse Saga, with multiple projects briefly touching on interconnected universes and timelines. It appears “The Marvels” will follow that plan.

The film’s latest trailer hinted that a separate universe will touch the MCU’s, which means there could be more heroes and characters.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” set up incursions — an event where one universe invades another. The Disney Plus show “Loki,” which is finishing its second season , has also hinted at the multiverse collapsing in on itself.

When it comes to the multiverse (and Marvel), all bets are off.

How to get caught up

If these tidbits didn’t help you and you want a full scan of what’s happening, here’s a breakdown of what to watch.

Best to watch: “Captain Marvel,” “WandaVision,” “Ms. Marvel” and “Secret Invasion.”

“Captain Marvel” and the three Disney Plus shows will help you understand all of the film’s main characters and where they’re at when the movie begins.

Helpful: “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

It doesn’t hurt to see how Captain Marvel helped turn the tide for the Avengers against Thanos. “Endgame” also shows us what Captain Marvel is up to after Thanos attacked Earth the first time.

For additional Easter eggs : “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”

These don’t matter all that much, other than that “Spider-Man” tells us a bit about Fury’s status (kind of) and that “Shang-Chi” shows how Captain Marvel is working with the Avengers.

If you’re a superfan: “Loki,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and [redacted because of potential spoilers].

These works won’t help you too much besides showing the state of the cosmos and Ronan the Accuser, who has since been replaced by Dar-Benn, Captain Marvel’s antagonist in the new film.

The Doctor Strange sequel also briefly shows Rambeau’s mother, Maria Rambeau, as an alternate universe’s Captain Marvel as well. There’s also some multiversal high jinks in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” that add a layer of intrigue.

Lastly, if you believe some of those pesky Marvel rumors , [redacted].

The Marvels director addresses debate that you need to watch TV shows to understand the movie

Exclusive: Nia DaCosta knows not everyone will have watched Ms. Marvel and WandaVision prior to seeing The Marvels, so she leant into confusing 'em

Kamala Khan, Carol Danvers, and Teyonah Parris in The Marvels

Nia DaCosta knows not everyone will have watched Secret Invasion , Ms. Marvel , and WandaVision prior to seeing The Marvels, so she did what any co-writer-director would do in that situation... She set out to confuse audiences more.

Over the years, much has been made of the fact that Marvel titles are becoming increasingly more linked, which can sometimes mean that if you're not up to date with every outing, you might not understand what's going on in a newer picture. Given the upcoming sequel's zany premise, DaCosta chose to lean into that feeling instead of trying to spoon-feed viewers and cram it full of clunky exposition...

Starring Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, and Brie Larson, The Marvels is set almost 30 years after the events of Captain Marvel , and sees Kamala Khan, Monica Rambeau, and Carol Danvers forced to form an unlikely team when their light-based powers become inexplicably entangled.

"I definitely wanted, because they're so disoriented with the switching, for people to be inside of their experience," she tells GamesRadar+ ahead of the 33rd MCU movie's release. "I wanted it to be very subjective; and each of them is doing very different things when the switching starts so, yeah, I wanted it to feel as jarring for the audience as it is for them."

As vengeful Kree warrior Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) creates chaos and conflict across the cosmos, as she tries to find a new homeland for her people, the titular trio must work together – alongside Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Goose, of course – to save the universe. Easier said than done when every time they use their powers, they don't know whether they're going to stay put, or wind up in a spaceship, a living room in Jersey City, or someplace else entirely.

While Captain Marvel has been seen on the big screen before, in Avengers: Endgame and briefly Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , Kamala, also known as Ms. Marvel, and Monica, who has yet to adopt a codename at the start of The Marvels (much to Kamala's dismay) have yet to make the jump from the small screen.

In WandaVision, Monica, the human daughter of Carol's best friend Maria, found herself with superpowers after being exposed to Scarlet Witch's Hex – though she's yet to really embrace them, and has instead joined Fury's human-Skrull aerospace defense organization S. A. B. E. R. Throughout Ms. Marvel's six-episode run, Kamala Khan learned she was a mutant, which is the reason she didn't die after she was exposed to the Inhuman mutagen known as the Terrigen Mist .

In the miniseries' finale, fans were baffled when Kamala went to use her power-refining bangle and was seemingly turned into Carol. Now we know, however, that the pair swapped places, thanks to The Marvels picking up right where the show left off...

"They have a whole history before this," DaCosta, who penned The Marvels' script with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik, continues. "We have Ms. Marvel, the TV show, Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and it was kind of a constant negotiation to figure out, ‘Okay, how much information do people need? It was a real trial and error.

"We don't want people to have to watch anything else but, of course, you also have to be honest and be like, 'This is the [33rd] project in this universe. It's sort of a sequel to five different things. So at a certain point, you have to just be like, ‘Okay, yeah, there are some things that we can't get in here, but it'll be fun.'"

The Marvels releases in UK and US cinemas on November 10. Keep your eyes peeled later this week for the full interview on the Inside Total Film podcast .

Marvel Is Going To Start Making Movies And Shows That Aren’t Part Of The MCU (And Therefore Require Less Homework)

Matt Prigge

Marvel Entertainment is in a bit of pickle right now. After a decade-plus of ruling the multiplex (and, in recent years, the streaming-verse, too), they’re not as bulletproof as they once were. Some movies underperform. Some shows go underwatched. A recent, brutal Variety piece highlighted all the ways in which they’re a mess, with low (for them) box office projections for The Marvels , some mishegoss over their Blade reboot , even desperate talks about getting the old Avengers gang back together . They’re also thinking of finally addressing one of the bigger complaints about the MCU.

Per Deadline , during a preview of Echo , their Hawkeye spinoff featuring Maya Lopez’s Native American deaf assassin, a Marvel exec quietly slipped in some big news. The show, he said, would be part of a new wing called Marvel Spotlight. These would be movies and shows that, while they may have a connection to the MCU, don’t require everyone has to watch — or at least read up on — all the stuff that’s happened in all the other movies and shows.

“Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic,” Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum told the crowd, “our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”

It will also allow Marvel to bring what Winderbaum described as “more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen,” saying that Echo would focus on “street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity.” Indeed Echo scored a Marvel show first: a “TV-MA” rating.

Of course, Echo is still connected to the greater MCU. As mentioned, it’s a spinoff, following a character introduced in Hawkeye. However, it sounds like one doesn’t need to have seen any other MCU title — including, maybe, Hawkeye — to make sense of Echo.

Till now, each MCU movie and show were interconnected. To fully grok, say, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, one had to see (or, again, read up on): Agent Carter, What If…?, WandaVision, Spider-Man: No Way Home , to say nothing of the first Doctor Strange and the previous two Avengers outings. That’s a lot of watching!

Perhaps Marvel execs finally realized that not everyone has time or energy or the inkling to watch hours upon hours of Marvel stuff just to understand one of them. And maybe this will be one way to combat that famous superhero fatigue that seems to be settling in.

You can watch the Echo trailer above. The show starts dropping on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10.

Marvel quietly admits there’s too much MCU homework

A new Marvel Spotlight banner will, like your favorite teacher, let you know there’s no homework required

Share All sharing options for: Marvel quietly admits there’s too much MCU homework

Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, raises an open bloodied hand toward a young Maya Lopez, aka Echo, in a still from the first trailer for Marvel Studios’ Echo TV series.

Marvel Studios has been too good at its job. After 15 years of building up the MCU as the ultimate interconnected saga, audiences have really taken to heart the idea that they need to see everything in order to catch the latest release. This was always going to be a concern — 15 years is a long time! Teenagers that saw Iron Man in theaters are now paying mortgages, spry adults circa 2008 now have to schedule “regular colonoscopy screenings.” It’s a different world, man!

But when taken in conjunction with the wider Marvel Studios turmoil , a nominal concern becomes a five-alarm fire. People need to know, or at least feel, like every new MCU show or film doesn’t come with a lengthy homework assignment. Marvel’s solution, then, is a new banner called Marvel Spotlight, which will debut when Echo premieres on Disney Plus and Hulu in Jan. 10, 2024 .

A special early screening of Echo showed off the new banner , which comes with a title card and its own piano fanfare by Michael Giacchino, the famed Lost and Ratatouille composer also responsible for the regular Marvel Studios tune (and director of MCU TV movie Werewolf by Night ). Developing a pre-roll title card for Spotlight titles signals just how serious Marvel is about letting people know about the studio’s intent here. In Echo ’s case, according to Marvel Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum , that’s to say “just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story [in Echo ].”

Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye

It is ironic that this is being used for a show about a character that was introduced in Hawkeye , with ties to a character from Daredevil , but that is neither here nor there. Ideally, every story stands alone well enough to enjoy, and only gets better when you see the connections. That Marvel feels Echo , about deaf mob enforcer Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), is worth signaling as a fresh start to audiences is probably as good a sign as any to those feeling a bit leery of the MCU.

In becoming the ultimate superhero comic book adaptation, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has inherited the ultimate superhero comic book problem: What to do when continuity stops being an asset and becomes a hurdle to clear. In its publishing, Marvel most famously responded to this problem by starting over with 2000’s Ultimate Marvel line, updating its characters for the new millennium in a way that would inform the MCU. The classic versions stayed in print, unbothered, but Ultimate Marvel gave creators and readers space for bolder and more divergent takes on classic heroes.

After about 15 years, however — there’s that number again — Ultimate Marvel’s continuity became as thorny as the mothership, and the whole thing ended .

Marvel’s Spotlight banner is not nearly as radical an idea, but it’s the first time MCU brass has really gestured at the fact that the project is not immune to its source material’s fatal flaw: The very thing that makes it interesting will, eventually, make it off-putting for a while. It’s normal! Nothing stays on top forever.

But hope springs eternal. Did you hear? Marvel is starting up its Ultimate Comics line again . Will it succeed? Will Spotlight work? Who knows. Let’s check in again in 15 years.

‘You have to be honest, it’s sort of a sequel to 5 different things’: ‘The Marvels’ director admits homework isn’t mandatory, but recommended

Ignore the assignments at your peril.

the marvels

One of the biggest bugbears even longtime fans have with the increasing scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the homework required to get the most out of a certain project , with The Marvels requiring basic knowledge of at least four titles covering screens both big and small.

To get the most out of it, you’ll need to be clued up on Captain Marvel, WandaVision, Ms. Marvel , and Secret Invasion , while Avengers: Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy will factor into the narrative in less obvious – but still important – ways.

the homework movie

Director Nia DaCosta has a hell of a job on her hands trying to ensure her movie stands alone without reminding everyone of what came before, but as she admitted to Total Film , brushing up on MCU history isn’t a necessity regardless of how highly it comes recommended.

“They have a whole history before this. We have Ms. Marvel , the TV show, Captain Marvel , WandaVision , and it was kind of a constant negotiation to figure out, ‘Okay, how much information do people need? It was a real trial and error. We don’t want people to have to watch anything else but, of course, you also have to be honest and be like, ‘This is the [33rd] project in this universe. It’s sort of a sequel to five different things. So at a certain point, you have to just be like, ‘Okay, yeah, there are some things that we can’t get in here, but it’ll be fun.'”

It’s already being used as a negative ahead of The Marvels releasing , but the real litmus test would arguably be plopping a total MCU novice down in the theater and then asking them for their thoughts when the credits come up.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

Welcome to Movie Homework, presented by Binge Media! Your hosts, Jack and Chad, are here to take you on a journey through the world of film, one movie at a time. Each episode, they will review a movie in depth, diving into the themes, performances, and technical aspects that make it a cinematic masterpiece (or not!) Along the way, they'll award the film superlatives for Most Entertaining Scene, Favorite Quote, Best Use of Music and many more. So grab your popcorn, sit back, and join Jack and Chad as they take you on a journey through the movies. To coincide with the recent release of The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) and Renfield (2023) from earlier in the year, the guys are taking a hard look at Francis Ford Copolla's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). A film made at a time where studios and filmmakers gambled on high-concept adult films, Chad and Jack discuss the making of the film, the range in quality of acting from the main cast, as well as their opinions on vampire movies and other Dracula films. There's also some bonus talk of Lawlapalooza 2023 and how they both almost died at an AirBnB. All that and more, so be sure to download now! Absolute criminal underutilized Wings Hauser.

It's filmed like a mocumentary, about a high school band trying to make it big with the pressures of sex and the expectations of their parents. Joan Collins has her way with one of the kids. Wings shows up 45 min in to the movie only to not be told he has gonorrhea, and then never shows again. its a garage band trying to make the big time and also get laid. Not really all that comical, not really all that dramatic. Joan Collins can't resist boy booty on a ladder.

Birth Year Challenge – 1982 12/37 watched

Homework is probably one of the worst teen sex comedies I have seen from the early 80s. Joan Collins is in the flick and lusting after her daughter's teen boyfriend. Mrs. Robinson, she is not. There is an awkward scene where she is groping him while he is doing household errands for her. The poster alludes to this scene in case you were wondering.

There are also weird fantasy scenes where the kid will say something to his therapist and then an out of place comedy skit appears. The upside is the rock band but the music isn't exactly good. At least the band looked like they were having fun, well they were to some degree.

Normally, I am the champion for bizarre flicks from the 80s that most others have forgotten. I just cannot get behind this one. Believe me when I say that I have tried.

Not good, but I loved the ending and what it implies about being young and full of dreams and constantly shifting interests and assuming you could succeed better than anybody in whatever field it is you’re into that day. A shame it took until the final 20 seconds to get to a universal truth

A couple of horny teenagers start a band... Somebody didn't do his homework. In fact, nobody did. Nobody really knew what he wanted: a sex comedy? A coming of age tale? An AMERICAN GRAFFITI rip off? Well, at the very least we get an early role for Wings Hauser as a sleazy music producer called Reddog who likes to offer girls coke and spreads some sexual disease. Oh, and there's also one funny line in the movie when some girl who got fucked by Wings and ends up at the doctor's is asked to name everyone she slept with in the last couple of weeks. 'Do you tell my mother?' She asks some nurse. 'Not if she's on the list.'…

Joan sued over the misleading ad campaign that made it seem like she had a major role, and she was eight to do so! 39 years later, that poster definitely tricked me into wasting 90 minutes on a confused mishmash of horny teen sex comedy, VD PSA, and parents-just-don’t-understand drama that barely has the Dame.

Only thing saving this from 1/2-star territory is a couple of laugh-out-loud lines. They may not be worth sitting through 90 minutes of garbage to hear, but they’re an unexpected delight for those suckered into watching this.

No wonder Joan sued.

Joan is a teacher who has a keen interest in her students' sex lives. Trashy fun, staring a woman trying hard to take Marlene Dietrich's title, 'Sexiest Grandmother in the World'.

Review by Alesia ★★★

An average 80s teen sex movie. It's not a comedy, though, I'd like to say. It would have been better if it was. Still, it's watchable, and realistic. The structure of the stories reminds me of Fast Times at Ridgemont: a group of teens who want to start a rock band and find love, but have to overcome various obstacles. The actors are okay, they're just normal teenagers who act like normal teenagers, and it works well enough, but no one really stands out as a great actor. Plus, the ending was a bit of a let down after everything, as it leaves loose ends. Overall, an okay movie.
