Money worksheets for kindergarten students to learn how to identify coins and bills, count small sums, and compare money values.
How do you teach kindergarten money?

Money worksheets for kindergarten can really help teach 5–6-year-olds about money (especially since having actual money in classroom settings can be inconvenient or downright impossible).
Things you can teach or reinforce through money worksheets:
- Money identification (coins and bills)
- Comparing money amounts to see which is larger and smaller
- Difference between things you need and things you want
- Understanding that things have a cost, and how to say the cost out loud
- You need to make choices about how to spend money
- Counting money
Money Identification Worksheets for Kindergarten
One of the first skills kids this age need to learn is to actually be able to identify coins and bills.
That’s where these kindergarten money identification worksheets come in. And I’m going to start with a set of them that you may have overlooked (that I think also introduces some fun into this).
Hint: I’ve got a set of these big, magnetic bills and coins that I use with my kindergartener-now-first-grader. They work great!
Coin Production Worksheets for Kindergarten
Getting kids fascinated with a subject is one of the surefire ways to help them learn it. And learning about making coins and then getting to make their own?
Well, kids this young really think that’s cool.
You can order this free Carnival Thrills and Dollar Bills book from the U.S. Currency Education Program to read to your group, and then use this Make Your Own Coin Lesson Plan + Worksheet .
Coin Identification Worksheets for Kindergarten
Coin identification worksheets can help students with skills like identifying coins, learning the values of coins, and comparing one coin value to another.
The U.S. Mint has some great coin coloring pages using the real-life look of each coin for identification purposes. I love how there are two worksheets per coin – for the front, and back – and that the coin face takes up the entire page.
Hint: here’s my article on free coin money coloring worksheets for kindergarten students .
You’ll also find a worksheet where students take real coins (or play ones that look real – here’s my article on the best free play printable money – scroll down until you get to the section on printable money that looks real) and line them up according to value. There’s an introduction to coins lesson plan with this .
Here’s a coin rubbing worksheet that’s also a fun activity for them to do, a money mini-book they can make (you have to scroll all the way down to get the link), plus a free coin sorting mat you could pair with printable coins.
And a find the coins worksheet (just for good measure!).
Bonus: not able to print out lots of worksheets? You can request multiple free coin coloring activity books here .
Bill Identification Worksheets for Kindergarten
Here are the best, free bill money coloring worksheets for kindergarten students .
A few I’ll highlight here:
- U.S. Currency’s play bill coloring worksheets
- Money puzzles worksheet
- Parts of a dollar flip book
- Cut and paste money worksheets (you have to scroll all the way down for the link to click)
Needs vs. Wants Money Worksheets for Kindergarten
Check out this Betty Bunny Wants Everything lesson plan and worksheets for PreK-Kindergarten.
Money worksheets for kindergarten include:
- Make a Choice shopping worksheet
- Wants worksheet
- Set of toy worksheets to use as a visual aid
Psst: check out more needs vs. wants worksheets here .
The FDIC has a Money Smarts packet of worksheets for elementary students , which includes a needs vs. wants worksheet for kindergarten students. It also comes with a teacher guide.
Psst: here are free online financial games for elementary students .
Saving Money Lesson Plans for Kindergarten
I love getting the conversation around saving money on as early as possible – kindergarten seems like a great time for it!
At least, I know my kindergartener was super interested in money at this age.
The St. Louis Fed’s Just Saving My Money Lesson Plan helps teach students about income, saving money, and saving goals. You’ll read the book Just Saving My Money by Mercer Mayer, and then go through a series of activities, such as having students draw a picture of a savings goal and then a picture of one way they can earn money to save for it.
They also have a lesson plan around the book You Can’t Buy a Dinosaur with a Dime . I particularly like the worksheet that comes with it, where students are asked to put a “+” sign next to the illustration of someone saving money, and a “-“ sign next to the illustration of someone spending their money.
Free Printable Money Math Worksheets for Kindergarten
Money math in kindergarten is, of course, very simple. Your students can work on skills like:
- Compare values to one another
- Add simple money sums up together
- Identify smaller money amounts inside of bigger money amounts (such as 4 quarters in a $1.00 bill)
Here’s a free “kindergarten worksheet on money” that includes questions like asking your students what the price of something is, what type of coin they’re looking at, and who has more money in a group of kids on a page. Answers are provided.
The U.S. Mint’s Money Patterns lesson plan and worksheets could make a great homework assignment (or you can bring in your change jar and let the students use it for the activity).
They also have the Battle of the Coins lesson plan and worksheets , where students compare and contrast coins to one another. What I love about this is students really get to compare coins both physically and by value.
And here’s their Pennies, and Nickels, and Dimes, Oh My! Lesson plan and worksheets. Students are asked how many of a certain coin are needed to make another coin’s value (such as to color in how many pennies are needed to make the value of a nickel), and more.
A few more options:
- Match the coin with its word
- Free coin counting game worksheets
- Circle coins needed to pay for an item (you need to register for a free account)
- Count the pennies worksheet
- Money math coin and bill worksheets
- Robot money counting game
Hint: not seeing what you want? You can use this free counting money worksheet generator to create what you need.

Help Your Kids Count Money
Counting money is a fundamental skill and a lesson for life that kids will apply in their daily life. Although it may appear so simple for adults, it might become overwhelming for kids interacting with it for the first time. The printable counting money worksheets come with realistic bills and coins to identify currencies and bills and count coins.
The worksheets are also designed especially for comparing the different amounts of money and making a change. They lay a strong foundation for identifying the money and developing counting skills in kindergarteners and 1st-grade kids. These worksheets are specially curated to provide kids ample money practice necessary to pass their school exams.
Tackling Money Worksheets
These printable money worksheets are designed appropriately for early grade kids who have just started to learn how to identify, count and do simple operations of money maths. In a world where credit cards and online transactions are becoming more popular, the age of kids in kindergartens is the most suitable age for introducing the idea of money and transactions in a tangible form. These money math worksheets have plenty of money math exercises, and they serve the function very well with the realistic printable money manipulatives for visual and kinesthetic exercises.
Grasping Money Identification Skills in Kindergarten
Kindergarten is the most suitable time to start an introductory course on physical money and learn how to identify coins and bills. The printable play money can be a funny game, and the resulting paper currency can be used in developing an understanding of monetary transactions.
Fun with Coins and Bills
As kids pass their kindergartens and proceed in higher grades, they should develop an understanding of identifying coins and bills and do simple operations involving money. They may get confused while operating dollars and cents simultaneously, but these specially designed worksheets can ease learning and understanding.
Helping your kids understand and learn money maths using worksheets can eventually help them successfully work with other complex and straightforward ideas. Interest can help speed up learning by getting your kids to formulate learning strategies, understand the basics of money math, and making them enjoy math a lot more.
Supporting Your Young Genius
It must be kept in mind that every kid is unique, and so is their learning curve. Not every child learns at the same speed and in the same way. Allow your child space and freedom to explore, create their methods, and make mistakes. It will make the learning journey more meaningful. Avoid expecting accuracy and speed at all times. Math money worksheets for kids
Learning about money and financial literacy should not be boring.
When children are young, playing shop with their toys was one of our most cherished memories from when my son was younger.
He would spend hours “shopping” and ordering his toys into the correct value.
Download our free shopping worksheets and add these to this money unit study.
I have broken these money worksheets into preschool, elementary, and middle-aged students so feel free to use what you want.
The download will include all of them, but just print out what you want, and use the rest later.
Preschool – Printable Price Tags
Teaching children about money should be done as early as possible. Playing shop at home with their toys is the perfect way to do this.
Download our free price tag printable and add them to your child’s favorite toys.
I highly recommend getting some pretend money and a cash register , but this is optional.

Cut around each of the price tags, add a small hole, and tie some ribbon around each of the price tags.
Give them to the children and let them add them to their toys.
Scroll to the end of the page and download these free price tags.

Identifying Coins and Money Worksheets
As soon as the children start asking questions about money, print out these free money worksheets and help them identify what the coins and notes are.

Learning about money worksheets
I love these counting money worksheets. In the first one, you have $1.25 to spend, you need to circle the money that equals and then choose what toys you want to buy.
The second worksheet has different coins and notes in six different jars and the children have to calculate the total amount in each jar. This involves money recognition too.

With these 3 worksheets, you need to be able to identify the money and then adding them together.
Counting coins is also a great way to teach math while learning about the importance of financial literacy.

This is the hardest money addition worksheet and also includes subtracting money too. There are 10 subtraction and 10 addition questions.

This real-life money worksheet is great for upper elementary grades.
The children need to pretend they are working in a cafe and calculate the cost of each order, and what change to give each customer from $10.

This would be a great role-play game if you have multiple children or are using these in school.

Learning how to write a check
Writing checks is something that we as adults do fairly regularly, but we must have learned at some point what goes where!
Print out our checks and encourage the kids to practice this really important life skill.

41-year-old teacher’s ‘kitchen table’ side hustle brings in $10,400 a month: When I don’t work, ‘the sales still come in’

Eight years ago, kindergarten teacher Becky Powell was growing restless on maternity leave.
A friend suggested she use her son's naptime to make some extra cash, and pointed her toward an educational resource platform called Teachers Pay Teachers. There, Powell started making worksheets for her fellow teachers to buy and download, working largely from her couch or "kitchen table," she says.
Teachers Pay Teachers is an Etsy-style marketplace for educational worksheets, activities and lesson plans across just about every grade level and subject matter. Powell's store, called Sight Word Activities , specializes in teaching literacy to kindergarteners, first-graders and other young students.
At first, revenue was slow. But within a couple of weeks, Powell started earning enough to cover small bills around the house. After four months, she made enough to pay off her and her husband's monthly student loan payments.
Don't miss: 21-year-old spent $300 to start his sticker side hustle—now it brings in up to $38,000 a day: I was ‘unprepared’ to go viral
Over the years, the 10-hour-per-week gig became a six-figure hustle that Powell and her husband Jerome run together. Last year, Powell's Teachers Pay Teachers store brought in $125,500, or just over $10,400 per month, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It.
Her husband, a full-time computer engineer, manages another store on the platform called Editable Activities that brings in roughly $50,000 per year.
"I have worksheets that I created eight years ago that still yield thousands [of dollars] in passive income every year," says Powell, 41, who lives in Beaverton, Oregon. "Even when I find myself not able to create ... the sales still come in."
Here's how Powell and her husband grew their side hustle, and what they're able to do with their extra cash.
Turning classroom materials into Disneyland trips
Powell's classroom is the perfect lab for her small business, she says. She can identify what concepts students struggle with, create worksheets as teaching aids and test-drive the ideas with her kindergarteners before selling them online.
"I call my students my clients," says Powell, with a laugh.
After Powell made $21,000 in her first year on Teachers Pay Teachers, she recruited Jerome — no relation to the chair of the Federal Reserve — to help her build a presence on the platform. Together, they focused her store around her knack for teaching children to sight-read.
He also showed her how to study the platform's searches, so she could see which worksheets were trending and integrate buzzy keywords into her profile, she says: "He'd always tell me, 'Do you know where the best place is to hide a dead body? On the third page of search results.'"
After seeing her success, Jerome launched his own Teachers Pay Teachers store selling customizable PDF worksheets in 2019, Powell says. The couple's tax consultant recommended they combine their businesses to form an S-Corp, which they did in 2021 — meaning their seller profiles remain separate, but the money all flows to the same place.
Some sellers on the platform only keep 50% of their sales. Powell and her husband are " premium sellers " who each pay an annual $59.95 subscription fee to keep 80% of their sales as profit. When teaching gets hectic, Powell scales back her side hustle work — ramping it up again during the summers to financially get ahead of the school year's unpredictability, she says.
Together, the couple uses their extra cash "for boring things, like paying down our mortgage. We also paid off our student loans," says Powell. "But we also took our [sons] to Disneyland, and the two of us went to Aruba. That's something we spent the money on to be frivolous."
